Costly Miscue Haunts Rebels In Loss

May 14, 2016

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (22-28 overall, 12-14 Mountain West) silenced the Fresno State Bulldogs (35-17, 21-8 MW) through six innings before a two-out throwing error one inning later swayed the momentum from one dugout to the other. The Bulldogs, which trailed 1-0, outscored the Rebels 7-1 over the final three innings en route to their 7-2 triumph at Earl E. Wilson Stadium Saturday.

The Scarlet & Gray managed to push across the contest's first run in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI single from Just Jones. The base hit scored Payton Squier from second base after he made his way into scoring position after he stole second base after he initially reached off a six-pitch walk.

UNLV's Kenny Oakley had cruised through the first six innings of the game with six strikeouts. Oakley, a senior who was starting his final game at home, allowed four Bulldogs to reach safely in that span; however, three were stranded when an inning came to a close and the fourth was retired on a double play ball.

Oakley began the seventh with a strikeout and a fly out to center, but the next batter â€" Kevin Viers â€" reached safely off the throwing mishap. The Bulldogs took advantage of the situation and notched back-to-back run-scoring singles from Jesse Medrano and Korby Batesole to move ahead by one run, 2-1.

FS added to its half of the scoreboard in the eighth with four runs off of three hits. Scott Silva started the stanza with a one-out single and scored two batters later when Aaron Arruda hit an RBI double down the right-field line. Austin Guibor joined Arruda on the bases with a walk, and the pair wound up scoring when Viers hit a three-run home run to left.

"It's crazy how a couple bloop hits after the third out should have been made changed the whole game," said head coach Stan Stolte. Kenny was outstanding today and deserved a better fate. We faced another top-notch pitcher that is 10-0 for a reason. That's a well-rounded and solid club over there. We need to get our offense going to give us a chance."

UNLV was able to get one run back in the bottom of the eighth off a groundout by Andrew Yazdanbakhsh after Austin Anderson and Squier had both connected on one-out singles. A wild pitch from Bulldogs' reliever Tim Borst allowed the pair to advance 90 feet close to home during Yazdanbakhsh's at-bat.

The Bulldogs tacked on one more score in the ninth with a sacrifice fly from Jake Stone.

FS's Jimmy Lambert improved to 10-0 on the year after he only allowed one run off of five hits in seven innings. Lambert struck out five against two walks. He gave way to Borst who tossed the final two innings, and gave up one run off of three hits. The reliever fanned four Rebels in his short stint on the mound.

Unfortunately, Oakley (4-7) was dealt the loss in eight innings of action. He struck out eight â€" one shy of his season-high nine that he has amassed twice this season, but surrendered six runs (four earned) off of eight hits and two walks.

Fellow senior Cody Roper entered in the contest in the ninth, and he was touched for one run off of two hits and one walk.

The Rebels and Bulldogs return to Wilson Stadium, once more, Sunday (1:05 pm) for a day that has been billed as "Senior Day" and "Fan Appreciation Day." Prior to the contest, UNLV will recognize its senior class â€" Oakley, Roper, Yazdanbakhsh, Ben Wright, A.J. VanMeetren and John Morey â€" for their time spent as members of the baseball program.

As part of "Fan Appreciation Day," those in attendance will have the opportunity to win prizes from America First Credit Union, Raising Cane's and Town Square Las Vegas.
