May 18, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Fresh off their season-best eight-game homestand, the UNLV Rebels hit the road to close out the 2016 regular season with a trip to the northern portion of the Silver State this week. UNLV will square off with in-state rival Nevada, Reno in a three-game series that has implications towards the final standings in Mountain West play as well as the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold.
This week's series between the Rebels and Wolf Pack begins Thursday evening at Peccole Park and continues through Saturday afternoon. Thursday's and Friday's contests are slated to begin at 6:00 pm while Saturday's finale is a matinee at 1:00 pm.
TUNE IN, WATCH & LISTEN: All three games of this week's series against the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack will be streamed live and free of charge in conjunction with the Mountain West Network and Campus Insiders. In addition, UNR will also have an radio stream available. Links to all video and radio as well as statistics for all three affairs can be found at UNLVRebels.com.
IT'S MORE THAN JUST THREE GAMES, PART 1: This week's three-game, Mountain West series in Reno, Nev., between the UNLV Rebels and Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack will help determine the finishes for both programs in the Conference standings. Prior to Thursday's first pitch, UNLV (13-14) sits fourth overall, and it owns a two-game advantage on fifth-place Air Force (11-16). UNR, on the other hand, is deadlocked with New Mexico in second place with identical 18-9 marks.
Fresno State (21-9) completed its 30-game MW slate and, in doing so, clinched at least a share of the league's regular-season title. Both UNR and UNM are three games back of FS and each must win out to have a chance of claiming a piece of the trophy. While UNR will play host to UNLV, UNM has the task of playing three games on the road against Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.
FS, UNR and UNM have sewn up no worse than the third seed in next week's Mountain West Championship in Albuquerque, N.M. UNLV and AF can do no better or worse than fourth or fifth while San Diego State and San Jose State, currently, sit fifth and sixth, respectively. SDSU and SJSU square off with one another this weekend and one win by the former will sew up fifth.
IT'S MORE THAN JUST THREE GAMES, PART 2: The UNLV Rebels and Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack begin their three-game, Mountain West series in Reno, Nev., Thursday. The three-game set will help determine which team's respective athletics department will receive the three points awarded for the sport in the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold.
The Wolf Pack won all three games played between itself and the Rebels at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in late March. By virtue of winning that series, UNR holds the edge in claiming those points for the sport; however, UNLV can delay the distribution for another week with some victories in Reno.
UNLV Athletics just claimed the 2015-16 Governor's Series - its fourth straight - despite the fact that there are still six points left to be claimed; three each for baseball and the Academic Progress Report. Currently, the Scarlet & Gray leads the fourth installment of the all-encompassing athletic and academic head-to-head competition by 12 points (28-5 to 16.5).
RECENT GOINGS-ON: The UNLV Rebels (23-28) enter the three-game, Mountain West series at Nevada, Reno off an 8-5 win over the Fresno State Bulldogs. That triumph, which came on "Senior Day," marked the end of UNLV's season-best eight-game homestand at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels went 4-4 in the stretch with two wins over New Mexico and single triumphs against UC Irvine and FS; however, they lost once both to UNM and Arizona State and twice more to FS.
UNR, on the other hand, has won three straight and 13 of its last 14 outings. The Wolf Pack has helped improve its standings in the MW with a 10-1 mark in contests against Conference foes during this lenghty stretch. Currently, the Pack and UNM sit tied for second with identical 18-9 marks.
