Four Rebel Hurlers Picked By Major League Teams Saturday

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball had a quartet of right-handed pitchers picked Saturday at the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Draft. Sophomore Dean Kremer was the first Rebel to have his name called, as the Los Angeles Dodgers chose him in the 14th round with the 431st overall pick. Junior D.J. Myers went to the San Francisco Giants in the 15th round (455th overall) while senior Ben Wright was tabbed one round later (16th: 476th) by the Chicago White Sox. Senior Kenny Oakley rounded out the Rebel selections when he was picked by the Colorado Rockies in the 31st round (920th).

Myers, Kremer and Oakley â€" all selected by National League West squads â€" made up the Rebels' starting weekend rotation while Wright served as the team's closer. Combined the foursome made struck out 195 batters and threw 294.2 innings in 64 appearances, 43 of which were starts.

"I'm so excited for those four guys," said head coach Stan Stolte. "You just never know if it's going to happen until it actually does. We try to keep them grounded because there are so many players every year that expect to get drafted and never do. It's a tough business and I'm glad these organizations had the faith in these guys to continue their careers. They will represent UNLV well and we are proud of them."

Kremer posted a 4.92 ERA and a 4-5 record in his first season pitching for the Scarlet & Gray. The Stockton, Calif., native threw 82.1 innings in a total of 12 starts and three relief appearances during the 2016 campaign. He tossed a minimum of 5.0 innings in 12 outings, and managed 8.0 frames against Grand Canyon (April 4), San Diego State (April 10) and Cal State Fullerton (April 24). He struck out a total of 46 batters with a season-high eight in the GCU affair. The Stockton, Calif., native came to Las Vegas after being selected by the San Diego Padres in the 38th round (1,137 overall) of the 2015 MLB Draft after he compiled a 13-1 record and a 2.00 ERA at San Joaquin Delta (Calif.) Myers, a local product out of Henderson, Nev., and Coronado High School, made a total of 30 appearances, 29 of which were starts, and compiled an 4.87 ERA and 8-8 record in 164.1 innings during his two years at UNLV following a one-year stint at the College of Southern Nevada. This past season, Myers was tabbed to the 2016 Mountain West All-Conference First Team and also earned the MW Pitcher of the Week honor once during the year. He got the nod to start all 15 weekend series as well as the Rebels first game at the MW Baseball Championships in late May. For the year, he registered a 5.23 ERA and a 6-4 record in 84.1 innings and also struck out a team-best 70 batters, which included a career-high eight against Ohio State (March 11). He fanned at least five batters on nine occasions.

Wright came to UNLV via West Jordan, Utah and Colorado Northwestern Community College. The reliever, who also earned Second Team All-MW recognition, notched a single-season record 11 saves en route to a 2-2 record in 19 appearances, 18 of which were in relief, and 86.1 innings this season. Six of Wright's saves required him to pitch two or more innings, and that included a pair of 3.0-inning outings against New Mexico (May 8) and Fresno State (May 15). He struck out 21 batters on the year with a minimum of one in 14 trips to the mound. Overall, he was 3-4 with a 4.59 ERA in 34 appearances in two years as a Rebel. He sits tied for fifth in the program's career record book in saves with 13.

Oakley won a total of 16 games â€" four in each season â€" in his four-year career at UNLV. The Coronado HS graduate was a three-time Mountain West Pitcher of the Week and a 2015 All-MW Second Team selection. Dating back to his freshman season (2013), he struck out 245 batters and compiled a 3.49 ERA in 63 appearances (47 starts). He tossed a pair of complete game victories: Nevada, Reno (March 7, 2014) and San Jose State (March 6, 2015). He led the Rebel pitching staff in ERA (4.36) and innings pitched (88.2) while tying for the top spot in starts (15) and complete games (one). He started one game in all 14 of UNLV's weekend series and game two of the MW Championship. He threw a minimum of five innings in 13 starts. He struck out 58 batters with a season-best nine in an affair with Ohio State (March 13).
