June 8, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball's Kyle Isbel was selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper to the 2016 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team. This national acknowledgement follows the Mountain West's Co-Freshman of the Year recognition bestowed upon the Fontana, Calif., native last month.
Isbel played in all 56 games this season with 55 of those starts at third base. He led the squad in at-bats (232), runs (38), triples (eight) and total bases (103), and was second in average (.319), hits (74), RBI (28), slugging (.444), and stolen bases. He hit safely in 43 games and scattered multiple-hits in 20 of those, which placed him second on the team in that category. He tied for third in multiple-RBI games (five) with a season-best five knocked in against New Mexico (May 8).
In addition, he had three hitting streaks that spanned six or more games; the longest of which was a 13-gamer that included six multiple-hit affairs. In this stretch, he hit .400 (22-for-55) with 10 RBI and 10 runs scored.
Coincidentally, Isbel shared positional honors with Air Force's Nic Ready, who also garnered a share of the Conference's Freshman of the Year award.
Isbel is the first Scarlet & Gray freshman to be recognized by Collegiate Baseball since Erick Fedde and Zack Hartman were tabbed for their pitching prowess in 2012 and 2011, respectively.
