Two defensive breakdowns were the difference in the game on Friday night as UNLV dropped its men's soccer season opener at Old Dominion by a 3-1 score from the ODU Soccer Complex.
"Tough day on the field for the Rebels," said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. "Two mistakes on counter attacks when we had the ball in their box, and a free kick leading to a third goal. We have to defend better. But we are young and we have 14 newcomers on the team, we have to find a way to play not as great individuals, but play together as a team to get the win."
The Monarchs got on the board early with a score in the 13th minute. ODU took advantage of a long ball played out towards the sideline near midfield. A UNLV defender attempted to shield to allow the ball to go out of bounds, but Sebastian Hauret was able to race in and keep the ball alive, and then raced down the field before feeding Niko Klosterhalfen for a score from inside the box.
UNLV would tie the game at 1-1 on Danny Musovski's first score of the year. The Rebel junior took a long pass from Shota Takada, raced past a defender before sending in a shot cross cage for the score in the 23rd minute. Musovski kept up the pressure on the ODU backline, attempting several shots in the final minutes of the half. It was the Monarchs who would score the next goal however, thanks to a Rebel foul that resulted in a free kick. Hauret would receive his second assist of the night when he sent the ball into the box where it was headed in by Tyler Edwards in the 41st minute for a 2-1 edge.
ODU ended the half with a 9-6 edge on shots, but the Rebels kept it to a closer margin in the second half, trailing just 7-6. Once again though it was the Monarchs coming up with a score, as miscommunication on the Rebel defense allowed Hauret to get inside the box and feed Klosterhalfen for a goal, making it a 3-1 contest. That would be the final result as well.
UNLV finished the game with 12 shots, to 16 for ODU. Nathan Bohm posted five saves in net, while Alex Tiesenhausen finished with five as well for the Monarchs. UNLV did hold a 6-5 edge on corner kicks.
The Rebels are back in action on Sunday at 4 pm (PT) at VCU.
