Freshman midfielder Timo Mehlich's first career score came at the perfect spot for UNLV, as his shot in the 104th minute gave the Rebels a 2-1 road victory at VCU on Sunday night from Sports Backers Stadium. The Rebels evened their season record at 1-1 following a two-game road trip in Virginia this weekend. The VCU Rams, who were receiving votes in the preseason top-25, were handed their second straight overtime setback.

"Amazing overtime win for our players," said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. "To get a win like this on the road is so important for developing the chemistry of our team. Mehlich and (Danny) Musovski combined for a thrilling goal in sudden death to allow us to win the match and split our road trip."

Musovski got the Rebels on the scoreboard first, as he took a pass from Tyler Allen from the right wing, and slotted a shot through the goalkeeper for the score in the 24th minute. It was the second goal in as many games for the junior from Henderson.

The Rams came back quickly, tying the game at 1-1 in the 30th minute after a ball rebounded off the Rebel goalkeeper. Rafael Santos collected the ball and quickly scored for the home team's first goal of the night. The half would end with the score tied at 1-1, and the Rams held the early shot lead at 5-4.

Following halftime, VCU came out on the attack but could not get past UNLV's Nathan Bohm, who posted four saves in the game, two in the second half. The Rebels started to pick up their pressure over the second part of the stanza, and would take a total of seven shots in the second 45 minutes, to just four for VCU. Again though the half ended in a tie, still at 1-1, sending UNLV to its first overtime action of the season. Both teams took two shots each in the first extra period, but with again no score the game went to double-overtime.

In the 102nd minute UNLV received a huge break when the Rams' Fortia Munts was hit with his second yellow card of the match, following his first in the first overtime period. That left VCU shorthanded, and UNLV did not take long to take advantage. Musovski set up the winning score when he fed Mehlich at the top of the box, and he sent in a shot that deflected off a Ram defender and over the goalie to end the game.

UNLV finished the game with a 14-11 edge on shots, including 10-5 on shots on goal. Corner kicks were even for both sides at four.

The Rebels are back in action this coming weekend in the Johann Memorial Classic. UNLV opens the four-team event on Friday at 7 pm against Cal State Fullerton at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Santa Clara and UC Riverside follow at 9 pm. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 4, when the Rebels play UC Riverside at 7 pm, with the fourth game set for 9 pm that night.
