Aug. 3, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball program has added Ernie de la Trinidad, Garrett Poole, Drew Newson and Andrew Schultz to the roster for the 2017 campaign, head coach Stan Stolte announced Wednesday. All four come to UNLV via the junior college ranks, three of which will be juniors while the fourth will be a redshirt sophomore.
The quartet joins Alan Strong, who signed with the Rebels in April - and 2015 fall signees Zach Barnhart, Jake Lewis and Bryson Stott as additions Stolte has made to next year's squad.
Poole and de la Trinidad come to Las Vegas after playing in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference for GateWay Community College and Central Arizona College, respectively. Newson played locally at the College of Southern Nevada, a member of the Scenic West Athletic Conference. Schultz played at Grossmont College (Pacific Coast Athletic Association) alongside Strong.
"We were very fortunate to add these quality players this late," said Stolte. "The two from Grossmont will battle for important pitching roles for us next spring. Strong comes in as more of a starter while Schultz could have a big role out of the bullpen. Poole had a great year last year and also has a chance to immediately contribute. Ernie has a chance to be a very significant player for us, he has hit everywhere he has played and plays the game the right way. Drew gives us some depth at the catching position and has proven to be a consistently good hitter. All five of these guys really get it off the field and will represent us well in the community and in the classroom."
De la Trinidad, a Phoenix native, guided the Vaqueros to a 45-14 overall record and a first-place finish (26-10) in ACCAC action. In his only season at CAC, he hit .399 with 59 hits, 22 of which went for extra bases (11 doubles, six home runs and five triples) that translated to .692 slugging and .497 on-base percentages. He knocked in 49 RBI and scored 40 runs while also stealing 12 bases. Not only was he tabbed a First Team NJCCA Division II All-American, but he was also a NJCCA Academic All-American. The outfielder was voted the ACCAC's Defensive Player of the Year as well as First Team All-ACCAC.
Newson, a local product out of Bishop Gorman High School, owned a .352 batting average with 62 hits, 46 RBI and 31 runs in a total of 73 games, 57 of which were starts, for CSN. His 18 extra-base hits (10 doubles, five home runs and three triples) and 24 walks helped him amass .528 slugging and .428 on-base percentages. Last season, he registered a .394 average with 41 hits, 35 RBI and 22 runs. In his two campaigns with the Coyotes, the squad finished first in SWAC play with 23-9 and 28-8 records in 2015 and '16, respectively. Overall, CSN won 86 games with a minimum of 40 each year.
Poole compiled a 16-3 overall mark and made 36 appearances, 22 of which were starts, in two seasons pitching for the GateWay Geckos. During his sophomore season, the Tempe, Arizona native helped the team to a third-place showing (26-14) in ACCAC play and an overall record of 43-22. On the mound, he posted a 13-2 record with three complete games and, in doing so, was recognized as a Third Team NJCAA Division II All-American and also named to the All-ACCAC and All-Region DII First Teams.
Schultz, a right-handed reliever from San Diego, made a total of 38 appearances in two years with the Grossmont Griffins. He threw a total of 84.2 innings and amassed a 7-4 record with five saves. He made four starts during the 2015 campaign and only two this past season. As a sophomore, he was named a First Team All-PCAC selection after he helped the Griffins to a 31-12 mark and a first-place finish (19-5) in the PCAC.
