Ballou Named Outstanding Rebel of the Week

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer midfielder Katie Ballou has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

Ballou, a local product out of Foothill High School in Henderson, scored two goals in Sunday's 4-1 victory over Fresno State, helping the Rebels capture their first Mountain West victory in 2016. In Friday's conference opener, Ballou also assisted on UNLV's lone goal of the night in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of San Jose State. Ballou's first goal on Sunday came on a penalty kick after a hand ball foul was called in the box on the Bulldogs. The true freshman's first attempt was called back after players rushed the box too early, but she calmly nailed the second one to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead. Her second goal was scored off of a free kick from 25 yards out when she intended to send a cross into the box, but her powerful kick instead went through the keeper's outstretched hands and just under the crossbar. It was Ballou's second goal of the season directly off of a free kick and her fourth overall.

The Rebels head out on the road for week two of Mountain West Conference play. Friday's contest is set for 3 p.m. PT at Wyoming, followed by a 12 p.m. PT match at Colorado State on Sunday.
