LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Cal State Fullerton's Alex Heilmann broke open a tight contest between UNLV and the Titans when he scored twice in the final 16 minutes to complete a hat trick and give the visitors a 3-1 victory Friday night in the first game of the Johann Memorial Classic.
The Rebels found the going tough in the first half, as star forward Danny Musovski suffered an injury three minutes into the game and would sit out the rest of the game. UNLV struggled to find its offense without the junior, as it was outshot 13-0 over the opening 45 minutes. It was only the strong play of goalkeeper Nathan Bohm, who finished the game with a career-high 10 saves, that limited the Titans to a single goal in the half, a shot by Heilmann in the 34th minute.
UNLV came out of halftime looking to press back, and was able to creating several scoring chances. Keeping the pressure on finally paid off in the 58th minute following a long throw that made it to the far post. A Titan defended headed the ball down before it bounced to the feet of Wayde Scibilia. The transfer from New Mexico quickly blasted a high shot into the goal from just four yards out for his first score as a Rebel, trying the match at 1-1 in the 58th minute.
The game remained tied for the next 17 minutes before the Titans recorded their second goal, a header by Heilmann off a corner kick by Nicolo D'Amato in the 75th minute. Heilmann added to the lead in the 85th minute when he stole the ball from a defender, took on Bohn one-on-one and scored from 10 yards out.
The Titans finished with a 23-3 edge on shots, 10-1 edge on corner kicks.
UNLV is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 4, when it faces UC Riverside at 7 pm on the second day of the Johann Memorial Classic.
