UNLV MEN'S SOCCER

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) Junior forward Danny Musovski factored in all three goals on Friday night, including the clinching score in the 89th minute as UNLV men's soccer broke a five-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over CSU Bakersfield in the WAC opener for both teams. The Rebels improved to 3-7, 1-0 in the league, while CSUB dropped to 2-7, and 0-1 in WAC play.

UNLV had a great defensive effort in the first half, holding the Roadrunners to just one total shot. The Rebels took an early lead in the 14th minute, when Musovski sent a short pass through the middle of the backline that Marquis Pitt ran up to and dribbled past the charging goalkeeper before sending in a shot on the empty goal. That score, Pitt's second of the year, put UNLV up 1-0, and that lead would hold for the rest of the half.

The Rebels pushed the lead to 2-0 less than a minute after halftime. With UNLV on the move forward, Memo Diaz sent a pass down the middle. Musovski outraced the backline to the ball and blasted in a shot from 15 yards out to the left side in the 46th minute, for what was the eventual game-winner.

CSUB got on the scoreboard in the 66th minute to ruin the shutout opportunity for the Rebels. The scoring play started when UNLV blocked a free kick attempt and the ball came out to near midfield. Jacob Alatorre collected the ball and send in a long high pass over the Rebel backline, that was attempting to set up an offsides call. However, Jamie Carey-Morrell was ruled to be onside, and was wide open with no one in front of him when with his back heel he one-timed the ball to the top corner of the net.

The Roadrunners kept pressuring for a tying goal but UNLV's defense would stay strong. The game was sealed in the 89th minute thanks to Musovski's second score of the night. Daniel Moran helped start the play when he sent in a long pass to Musovski at the top of the box. Musovski would take the ball into the left side of the box, outracing two defenders before slotting a shot cross cage for his fifth score of the season.

UNLV ended the game with 13 shots, nine of them on goal, to nine shots for CSUB. The Roadrunners meanwhile had a 6-5 edge on corner kicks. Enrique Adame made three saves in net for UNLV, while Nicolas Clever posted six saves for CSUB.

The Rebels are back in action Sunday, Oct. 2, when they host San Jose State at 1 pm in a WAC contest.
