Yang Named Outstanding Rebel of the Week

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Women's Tennis senior Carol Zi Yang has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

Yang, a senior from Shenzhen, China, went 2-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles action at last weekend's Freeman Memorial Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in the team's first tournament of 2017. Yang, ranked 48th in the country, opened play by stunning 14th-ranked Meible Chi of Duke in a 7-6, 7-6 thriller, then wrapped up her singles competition with another upset, this time over 39th-ranked Spencer Liang of Florida, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9). In doubles play, she teamed with En-Pei Huang to take down UCLA's Terri Fleming and Alaina Miller, 6-3, then pushed the nation's No. 2-ranked duo from UNC into a tiebreaker before falling 7-6.

UNLV will open its dual match season on Friday, January 20 when it hosts New Mexico State starting at 10 a.m.
