Nov. 1, 2017 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV football senior Johnny Stanton has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Stanton, from Rancho Santa Margarita, California, made his fifth career start at quarterback for UNLV Saturday and led the Rebels to a 26-16 upset win at Fresno State. Filling in for the injured
Armani Rogers, the senior was efficient through the air, completing eight of his first 10 passes and going 17-for-29 with 155 yards for the game. Stanton added 11 carries for 38 yards on the ground, including a seven-yard touchdown run that snapped a 13-quarter streak by the Fresno State defense without allowing a touchdown.
Saturday marked Stanton's first action of 2017 behind center, but the senior has also appeared on defense and special teams this season, recording a career-high six tackles at linebacker against Utah State on October 21 and a blocked a punt against San Jose State on September 30, which set up a touchdown run for
Lexington Thomas in the win over the Spartans.
The Rebels return home this weekend for their Ninth Island Showdown against Hawai'i at Sam Boyd Stadium. Saturday's kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
