LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV freshman quarterback Armani Rogers (6-5, 225) has been named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
This marks the second weekly league award for a Rebel this season as kicker Daniel Gutierrez was honored with the special teams nod last month.
A Los Angeles product and graduate of Hamilton High School, Rogers set a school record for quarterbacks with 193 net yards rushing in UNLV's 38-35 victory at New Mexico Friday. He also threw for 211 yards with no turnovers as the Rebels stayed alive for bowl eligibility. Trailing by five points, Rogers led his team on a game-winning 70-yard scoring drive in 40 seconds that included a 14-yard touchdown pass and then two-point conversion toss both to Kendal Keys that gave their team a third consecutive conference victory for the first time since 1994.
Rogers, who currently has the most yards rushing in a season by a UNLV quarterback with 731, ripped off the seventh-longest run in school history earlier in the game when he went for an 83-yard touchdown jaunt just before halftime. He currently ranks seventh in the MW and 55th in the nation with 81.2 yards per game on the ground.
Rogers is the seventh Rebel quarterback to earn the Mountain West offensive award since the league opened for business in 1999 and the first since current UNLV senior Kurt Palandech was honored November 14 of last season.
UNLV (5-6/4-3) closes its regular season by playing at Nevada, Reno Saturday. The annual Battle for the Fremont Cannon, which is part of the Governor's Series sponsored by NV Energy and Barrick Gold, kicks off at noon on AT&T SportsNet, which can be found in Las Vegas on Cox channel 313/1313 HD, DirecTV 684 & CenturyLink 760/1760.
