Nov. 8, 2017 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV football senior Johnny Stanton has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday. He is the second student-athlete to earn the honor in back-to-back weeks this academic year.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Stanton, a Rancho Santa Margarita, California, native, has led the Rebels to two straight wins as the starting quarterback. He helped UNLV beat Hawai'i at home 31-23 Saturday as the Rebels claimed the Island Showdown Trophy, passing for a career-high 244 yards and two touchdowns. The senior added 27 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown, his second in as many games.
Stanton has also appeared on defense and special teams this season, recording a career-high six tackles at linebacker against Utah State on October 21 and a blocked a punt against San Jose State on September 30, which set up a touchdown run for
Lexington Thomas in the win over the Spartans.
At 4-5, UNLV needs two wins over its last three games to become bowl eligible. That quest begins Friday against BYU in what will be the last home game for Stanton and 16 other seniors. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
