CSU BAKERSFIELD 5 UNLV 1LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Softball wrapped up the first weekend of the 2017 season with a 5-1 loss to CSU Bakersfield on Sunday in their final game of the Sportco Kick Off Classic at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels moved to 3-2 on the year with the loss.
UNLV's offense ran into a buzzsaw in Roadrunner pitcher Summer Evans, who stymied the Scarlet and Gray with a no-hitter through 4.0 innings and only gave up one unearned run and five hits in a complete game performance.
Making her collegiate starting debut in the circle, freshman
Charlie Masterson held CSUB scoreless through the first three innings until she got into a jam in the fourth. After a walk, a fielder's choice and a couple singles loaded the bases with two outs, Masterson hit the next batter to walk in a run and that was the end of her day. Fellow freshman
Mara Kemmer entered the game in relief and gave up a single down the left field line that was just out of the reach of third baseman Jade Yadao-Valdez, allowing two more runs to score. Another single and an error brought two more runs home before Kemmer got a groundout to end the inning. The damage was done, however, as the Roadrunners scored five to take a lead they never gave up.
The lone run for the Rebels came in bottom of the sixth inning. Senior
Brianna Gatlin capped an impressive weekend with a single to center and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Junior
Janine Petmecky sent a high pop up into the air that was dropped by the second baseman, allowing Gatlin to score from second before Petmecky was tagged out after getting caught between first and second.
Overall, the Rebels had a solid opening weekend - both at the plate and in the circle. As a team, they batted .319 with 43 hits 25 runs and 23 RBIs. Six players ended the weekend hitting above .300, led by Gatlin who went 8-for-16 with two doubles, two triples, four RBIs and four runs scored to pace the UNLV offense. On the mound, the Rebels recorded a 3.09 team ERA over the the first five games, with senior
Morgan Ettinger leading the way going 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA, 11 strikeouts, four walks and a save.
UNLV is back in action at home for the second straight weekend, this time hosting the DeMarini Desert Classic Feb. 16-19 at Eller Media Stadium and Stephanie Lynn Park in Henderson. Sixteen teams total will compete in the four-day tournament, with the Rebels set to take on Northern Iowa on Thursday night at 6:45 p.m.
