Three In-State Players Join Rebels For 2017 Season

Feb. 13, 2017

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Three in-state players have signed national letters of intent to play for the UNLV men's soccer team in the fall of 2017, head coach Rich Ryerson announced on Monday. Joining the Rebels will be Jesus Partida from Reno, along with Las Vegas natives Marco Gonzalez and Ivan Farias.

The first signee is a familiar name for fans of the current Rebel squad, as Jesus is the younger brother of senior Kevin Partida, an all-conference midfielder in 2015 who will receive a medical redshirt for the 2016 season after missing the entire year with a torn ACL, and will play his final year alongside his younger brother in 2017. The Partidas become the second set of brothers on next year's squad, joining senior Danny and junior Adam Musovski.

The younger Partida is coming off a senior season in which he led Sparks High School to the state championship title after scoring the winning goal, his 32nd of the season. The 5-11 midfielder earned state 3A Player of the Year honors as well after missing his junior season with an injury. Partida played his club soccer with Sagebrush Soccer Club.

"We're excited about bringing Jesus on board and have high expectations on his immediate contributions to the team," said Ryerson. "He's a prolific scorer from the midfield, and I think he will compliment his brother very well."

The first local recruit is Gonzalez, a 5-9 midfielder who began his high school career at Valley High and helped them to the state finals his sophomore season while earning All-Southern Nevada honors. He then moved onto to Mission Heights Preparatory High School in Casa Grande, Ariz., while playing for the Real Salt Lake Academy for his junior and senior seasons and helped them to the USSDA Southwest Division title as well as to the USSDA national quarterfinals.

"Marco has had a great experience with Real Salt Lake Academy which is one of the highest levels one can play in youth soccer," said Ryerson. "His ability to find players in the final third will give us even more scoring chances."

The third new signee is Ivan Farias, a 5-10 defender for Heat FC, which is coached by current UNLV assistant Frank D'Amelio and which won the 2016 State Cup title. Farias attends Veterans Tribute High School in Las Vegas, and has been a US Soccer Youth National Team Training Center Participant

"Ivan will be explosive on the wide position on either side with great athleticism and speed and technical ability," said Ryerson. "He attacks with the same determination that he defends with throughout the game."

UNLV will bring back for the 2017 season all 11 starters from last year's WAC Tournament championship squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
