Rebels Swept In Sunday Doubleheader

Feb. 19, 2017

BOX SCORES: UC Davis 8, UNLV 3 | Omaha 8, UNLV 2

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader Sunday on the third and final day of the UNLV Classic at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels (1-2) opened the day with an 8-3 loss to the UC Davis (1-1) before the Omaha Mavericks (1-2) bested the hosts 8-2.

Cooper Esmay paced the Scarlet & Gray's offense with four hits in six at-bats for a .667 average. Austin Anderson also tallied a .667 average with two hits in three at-bats. In all, UNLV had six players register at least two hits Sunday with another three coming from Bryson Stott.

In game one, the Rebels staked themselves to a 3-0 lead with help from three hits and two Aggie errors. Anderson led off the frame with a double and worked his way back to the plate off a fly out and a wild pitch uncorked by UCD starter Orlando Razo (1-0). UNLV managed to load the bases off a walk, a single and a catcher's interference before Nick Rodriguez and Nick Ames followed RBI from a fielder's choice and a single, respectively.

Larry Quaney protected that lead through his 6.0 innings on the mound; however, the starter earned a no-decision after throwing 6.0 innings. Quaney struck out three and allowed only one run -- a fifth-inning homer run -- off of two hits and three walks.

The Rebel bullpen took over in the seventh, but was not able to protect the lead, as the Aggies scored four times in the inning and three more in the eighth. Paul Richy was touched for two runs while Blaze Bohall (0-1) permitted two more and, subsequently, was tagged with the loss in 0.2 innings of work. Andrew Schultz surrendered the final three runs to UCD in 1.0 inning.

Razo was credited with the win for UCD. He went 6.0 innings with three strikeouts against three runs, seven hits and one walk.

In game two, Omaha jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second off a two-run single by Sam Palensky. UNLV countered in the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run from Max Smith -- the first of his career -- to cut into its deficit.

The contest remained a 2-1 affair until the sixth when the Mavericks began to use the long ball -- three two-run shots to left field -- to distance themselves from the Rebels. Ryan Cate bookended the home run barrage with one in the sixth and another in the seventh, while Adam Caniglia's came in between to start a four-run seventh.

UNLV's Tevita Gerber (0-1) tossed 6.2 innings and struck out six, but was saddled with the loss after he gave up eight runs (six earned) off of nine hits.

Jake Lewis and Bryan Menendez threw the final 2.1 innings of relief, and the duo combined to allow only one hit to the 11 batters they faced.

Corey Binger (1-0) pitched seven innings to earn the win for Omaha. Binger fanned five with one run and five hits against him.

The Rebels and Mavericks will take the diamond, once again, Monday for an afternoon matinee at 12:05 pm.
