Paco-Pedroni Named Outstanding Rebel of the Week

March 1, 2017
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Men's Swimmer Tom Paco-Pedroni has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

The senior from Nice, France, was key in helping the Rebels finish fourth overall at the WAC Swimming & Diving Championships last weekend as he earned two first-place individual event finishes and was part of the Rebels' title-winning teams in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. In the finals of the 200 freestyle race, he turned in a time of 1:34.32, an NCAA "B" time and just .17 seconds off his own UNLV record, to become the first Rebel to win a conference title in the event since Kyle Virva in 2010. He followed that performance with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle race, clocking a time of 42.85, also a NCAA "B" time and .28 seconds away from breaking his own UNLV mark, to earn his second conference championship in the event in his career -- the other coming in 2014. He also finished fourth in the 50 free with a time of 19.74.

In the relay events, the team of Paco-Pedroni, Or Sabatier, Forrest Beesley and Kasey Foley won the 400 freestyle relay title with a time of 2:52.53, which was fifth-all time for UNLV and just .08 seconds away from an NCAA automatic mark. It was also the Scarlet & Gray's third title in the event in the last four years. Paco-Pedroni, Sabatier, Foley and Dylan Tarazona teamed up to take first in the 200 free relay after recording the third-fastest time in program history at 1:17.55, which was an NCAA automatic qualifying time and the 11th best mark in the country. The foursome of Paco-Pedroni, Tarazona, Foley and Serginni Marten earned a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:28.38, while Paco-Pedroni Francois Van Wynsberghe, Brenton Sayers and Beesley took third in the 800 medley relay.

The Rebels will conclude the 2016-17 season at the NCAA Championships, March 23-25 in Indianapolis.
