SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (10-11, 5-4 MW) lost the third and final game of the weekend, Mountain West series contested at Tony Gwynn Stadium Sunday to the San Diego State Aztecs (13-7, 4-2 MW). The Rebels pushed out to an early one-run lead after one inning; however, the host Aztecs flipped things in their favor with three runs in the second and two more in the third. SDSU outdistanced itself from UNLV with a seven-run outburst in the sixth.

UNLV got things started with a leadoff single from Kyle Isbel. After a steal of second base, Isbel came around to score the game's first run off an RBI single to left field by Payton Squier.

Just after the Rebels left a runner at second in the top of the second, SDSU made the most of its opportunity in its half of the frame. UNLV starter Garrett Poole (2-2) walked the leadoff batter and then gave up a double to put two in scoring position for David Hensley, who evened the score at 1-all with a sacrifice fly. Dean Nevarez followed with a two-run home run that handed the Aztecs a 3-1 lead.

SDSU upped its lead to four, 5-1, off another two-out, two-run shot from Tyler Adkison.

The Rebels countered with a pair in the fourth to pull within two, 5-3, off a two-run double by Cody Howard. Ernie De La Trinidad and Justin Jones scored on the two-base hit after the former reached off a two-out single and the latter was walked.

The teams would remain separated by two runs, 5-3, heading into the sixth, but SDSU managed to string together six hits and two hit batters for a seven-run inning.

Jones factored in the final two scores for UNLV that occurred in the seventh and eighth. He led off the seventh with a walk and later scored off a groundout by Isbel. One inning later, a ball that he put in play was mishandled and the miscue allowed Nick Rodriguez, who initially singled, to score.

"SDSU played the game very sound defensively all weekend," noted head coach Stan Stolte. "At times, they played too fast for us and kicked our butt with their two-out hits. We competed, but we just couldn't keep them in striking distance today. We have to make every play when the game gives us that opportunity. Our margin of error is very small."

Adkison who went 4-for-4 with five RBI and two runs, plated the game's final run with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth.

Nevarez also had a five RBI day for the Aztecs to go along with his two hits and two runs.

UNLV's offense was paced by two-hit efforts from both Nick Ames and De La Trinidad. Howard led all with two RBI while Squier and Isbel had one each. Jones scored two of the team's five runs with the other three coming from Isbel, Rodriguez and De La Trinidad.

Poole was saddled with the loss in 5.2 innings of work. He allowed nine runs off of 10 hits and one walk. Blaze Bohall, who gave up three off of three hits, relieved Poole to close out the sixth. Andew Schultz and Chase Maddux also pitched an inning of relief.

SDSU's Cody Thompson (1-0) earned his first win of the year after he limited the Rebels to three runs off of six hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out two, but walked one. Thompson gave way to a bullpen that sent four relievers to the mound and combined for 4.0 innings, two runs (one earned) and three hits.

UNLV will travel to the West Texas plains for two games â€" Tuesday (6:30 pm CT/4:30 pm CT) and Wednesday (12:00 pm CT/10:00 am PT) â€" against the No. 4 Texas Tech Red Raiders, who are 17-4 and fresh off a weekend sweep of No. 21 Texas.

The Rebels will return to Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium for a three-game, MW series against New Mexico (March 24-26) after their two-step through the Lone Star State.

NOTES: UNLV has scored five runs in each of its past four games; unfortunately, it is 2-9 in contests it scores five or less … On the other hand, the team is 8-2 when it scores six or more … Squier and De La Trinidad extended their hitting streaks to 11 and 10 games, respectively … Squier also extended his reached-base streak to 21 while Bryson Stott's streak came to a close at 20 … De La Trinidad pushed his reached-base streak to 14 … With two hits Sunday, De La Trinidad and Ames upped their multiple-hit games to nine and eight, respectively.
