LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (10-15 overall, 5-6 MW) lost a 4-2 decision to the New Mexico Lobos (14-9, 8-0 MW) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium Saturday night. The Rebels led the Mountain West affair 2-1 after three innings; however, single tallies scored in the fifth, sixth and seventh allowed the Lobos to overcome their deficit en route to the two-run victory.
UNLV outhit UNM by two, 9-7, with help from multiple-hit performances from its 5-6-7 batters â€" Nick Rodriguez, Ernie De La Trinidad and Justin Jones. The trio combined to go 6-for-11 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored. Payton Squier also scattered a pair of hits while Bryson Stott had one.
The Lobos, who scored once in four different frames, got the scoring started off an RBI double by Andre Gregory. Jack Zoellner scored on Gregory's hit after reaching on a out-out single.
After leaving two on in both the first and second, the Rebels were finally able to capitalize in the third off a two-run, two-out single from De La Trinidad. Nick Ames and Rodriguez began the rally with a walk and a double, respectively, prior to run-scoring hit. De La Trinidad attempted to add to UNLV's side of the scoreboard off a single to right field from Jones, but he was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The game remained 2-1 in UNLV's favor until Gregory added another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth that plated Andre Vigil from third after his leadoff triple.
The Cherry & Silver reclaimed the lead in the sixth off a solo homer from Hayden Schilling and added an insurance tally in the seventh when Zoellner scored off a double play turned by the Rebels after the bases had been loaded.
UNLV had its chances to pull close in the contest, but was unable to exploit its myriad of opportunities. In all, the Scarlet & Gray left 10 on base, five of which were in scoring position. At least one was left on in the final three stanzas.
UNM's Johnathon Tripp (2-0) picked up the win in 7.0 innings of work and seven strikeouts. Tripp allowed two runs off of nine hits and two walks.
The Lobo bullpen threw 2.0 innings of scoreless relief beginning with Justin Slaten in the eighth and Christian Tripp in the ninth. The latter was credited with the save â€" his third of the year.
UNLV's Tevita Gerber (2-4) was on the hook for the loss despite pitching a strong 7.2 innings. Gerber allowed four runs (three earned) off of seven hits. He struck out one and walked one, as well.
Blaze Bohall tossed the final 1.1 innings of relief for the Rebels and struck out three against one walk.
The Rebels will return to Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium, once more, for the series finale Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:05 pm.

NOTES: Squier and De La Trinidad extended their hitting streaks to 15 and 14 games … Squier also extended his reached-base streak to 25 … De La Trinidad pushed his reached-base streak to 18 while Ames' went to 13.
