SAN JOSE, California (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (5-6 overall, 1-1 Mountain West) earned its first win, 7-1, in Mountain West play Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium over the San Jose State Spartans (4-5, 1-1). The host Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after their first at-bat, but their offense was stymied the remainder of the affair by Rebel starter Larry Quaney (1-0). UNLV's offense, on the other hand, produced its only runs between the fifth and sixth innings after it had stranded a total of seven runners in the first four innings alone.
Quaney threw all 9.0 innings for his first win of the season after he had a pair of no-decisions in his first two starts of the year. In all, he struck out one and allowed one run off of eight hits.
Saturday's complete-game effort is the first by a Rebel since Dean Kremer threw 8.0 frames in a 4-1 loss at San Diego State (April 10) last year. Delving deeper, it's the first time a Rebel hurler has thrown 9.0 innings since Kenny Oakley did so at home against San Jose State â€" a 2-1 loss â€" nearly one year ago to the day (March 6, 2016).
"Quaney really stepped up and delivered," said head coach Stan Stolte. "He attacked the zone all day. Hopefully, that will be contagious. Offensively, we did a much better job adding on today, which made Larry's job easier."
The Spartans' only run came off an RBI double from Joseph Stefanki that plated Kellen Strahm from second base. Strahm led off the bottom with a single and later moved into scoring position off a 4-3 groundout.
That was the only offense SJSU would manage in the contest as it stranded six runners the remainder of the game and only one of those had managed to reach third base.
After leaving four in scoring position over the first four frames, including three at third base, the Rebels capitalized on their opportunities in the fifth and sixth.
Nick Ames, who has had two big hits in the previous two outings for UNLV â€" both were two-run home runs, evened the score at 1-all in the fifth with a double to left center. Payton Squier scored on the two-base hit after he had initially reached on a fielder's choice.
The Rebels took the lead for good three batters after Ames with a two-run double to right field by Max Smith. Ames and Justin Jones, who had reached off a fielder's choice, scored on the play.
The Scarlet & Gray upped its lead with four more tallies in the sixth. Kyle Isbel and Bryson Stott got things stared with a one-out triple and walk, respectively. Squier followed with a sacrifice bunt attempt that was misplayed by SJSU reliever Jake Swiech and brought Isbel home. After a strikeout and walk, Jones laced a double down the right-field line that scored Stott and Squier.
Both Isbel and Smith had three-hit outings for UNLV while a total of six players had at least one hit.
SJSU starter Matt Brown (1-2) was tagged with the loss after he allowed three runs off of seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. Brown gave way to Swiech who also surrendered three runs, albeit only one was earned, in 0.2 innings.
The series finale is scheduled for 1:00 pm Sunday at Municipal Stadium. The Rebels will stay in the Bay Area one more day to play the Saint Mary's Gaels in Moraga at 2:00 pm Monday afternoon.
UNLV is back home March 10-12 for three conference games against Air Force. A two-game, midweek set against Grand Canyon will follow March 14-15.
