MORAGA, California (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (5-8 overall) concluded its trip to the Bay Area on a sour note Monday with a 7-3 loss to the Saint Mary's Gaels (8-3) at Louis Guisto Field. UNLV pushed out to a 3-0 lead through the first 3.5 innings of play, but watched as Saint Mary's batted around in its half of the fourth inning to kick start its comeback bid.
The Rebels got the scoring started in the third with RBI singles from Bryson Stott and Cooper Esmay. Austin Anderson led off with a walk and made his way to second and third off a wild pitch and a grounder put in play by Kyle Isbel. Anderson scored the game's first run when Stott too a 3-2 offering from Ty Madrigal (2-1) up the middle. Nick Ames stepped up two batters later and laced a two-out single to left. Both Ames and Stott moved up a base when Madrigal uncorked another wild pitch, this time with Esmay at the plate. Esmay eventually hit a ball towards Madrigal that allowed Stott to score.
UNLV pushed its lead to 3-0 in the fourth of another RBI single from Stott, this time Vince Taormina scored after beginning the stanza with a double to right field. Anderson assisted in the offensive with a sacrifice bunt that allowed Taormina to move to third safely.
The Gaels, who had left a pair of runners at second base in both the second and third innings, were able to manufacture runs in the their half of the fourth off UNLV starter Paul Richy (0-1) and reliever Andrew Schultz. In all, SMC was able to string together five hits â€" three doubles and two singles, a balk and a bases-loaded walk to turn its three-run deficit into a one-run edge.
SMC added a trio of insurance runs over the fifth and sixth innings. A sacrifice fly in the fifth upped the lead to two, 5-3, while two more crossed the plate in the sixth off a ground-rule double and a single.
Madrigal, who struck out 11, earned the win for SMC after throwing 5.0 innings. He allowed three runs off of nine hits and two walks.
Drew Strotman tossed the final four frames for the Gaels and earned a save in the process. Strotman struck out four and only surrendered two hits in his relief outing.
Richy was tagged with the loss for UNLV after he gave up four runs off of five hits in 3.2 innings of work. He was followed to the mound by four relievers who combined to throw 4.1 innings and allow three runs off of three hits.
The Scarlet & Gray returns to Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium for five straight that begins with a weekend series against the Air Force Falcons that will run Friday through Sunday. The three-game set is being billed as the "Military Appreciation Series," and any military personnel with an I.D. can receive two free tickets. Additionally, the first 500 fans through the stadium gates will receive a free Rebel baseball camo t-shirt while the first 600 pours of beer â€" courtesy of Miller-Coors and the UNLV Baseball Club â€" will only be $1.
Tickets can be purchased online and in-advance for $5 at UNLVTickets.com. Tickets purchased at the gate are $8 for adults, $6 for senior/faculty/staff, while kids 12 and under as well as UNLV students are free of charge.
