April 1, 2017

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

IOWA CITY, Iowa (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (10-20) was unable to hold onto late leads in each game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Iowa Hawkeyes (17-9) at Duane Banks Field. The Rebels fought back in both affairs only to see the host Hawkeyes rally in their final at-bats for 6-5 and 7-6 wins.

The Scarlet & Gray will head home to Las Vegas and play once at Earl E. Wilson Stadium against the Utah Valley Wolverines at 6:05 pm Tuesday night. The game is being billed as "$2 Tuesday" where tickets and hot dogs are $2 apiece while beer is discounted by $2. This will be UNLV's only home game until a three-game, Mountain West series with San Diego State on April 13-15.

"To lose that first game in such a gut-wrenching way after how hard these kids have continued to fight and then lose another hard-fought game, and to see how much they were hurting made me proud to be their coach," said head coach Stan Stolte. "The kids deserve better, but at the same time, it's a good life lesson; the game isn't fair, you have to overcome. After watching them play hard for seven hours today, I know we will not give in."

UNLV was led offensively Saturday by Ernie De La Trinidad who combined to hit .625 with five hits -- two of which went for extra bases (one home run and one double) -- and added four RBI and two runs. De La Trinidad notched two RBI and one run in each affair, and had three hits in game one and two more in game two.

Justin Jones (.444/four hits) and Nick Rodriguez (.429/three) also hit well in the twin bill. The former produced one run and one RBI to the latter's one RBI and three runs.

In game one, the teams were limited to scoring one run at a time up until Iowa's final at-bat in the bottom of the ninth. The Hawkeyes got their offense started early with a two-out RBI double from Robert Neustrom; however, the Rebels countered in the second and third with a sacrifice fly from Corey Pool and an RBI single from De La Trinidad, respectively.

The team's then went with the long ball to produce four of the contest's next five runs. Iowa got a solo shot from Jake Adams in the sixth while Rodriguez, De La Trinidad and Pool homered in the seventh, eighth and ninth -- all with two outs. Adams came up clutch for the Hawkeyes in his next at-bat; an RBI groundout in the eighth.

Moments after Pool upped UNLV's lead to 5-3 in the ninth, Iowa found itself in a hole after Larry Quaney had retired its first to batters off a fly out and a strikeout. Down to their final out, the Hawkeyes mounted a rally aided by a walk and a single to put runners on for Mitchell Boe, who hit a game-tying, two-run double down the right-field line to knot the score at 5-all. Four pitches later, Chis Whelan ended it with an RBI single to center.

Iowa's Zach Daniels (6-1) picked up the win in 2.1 innings of relief despite allowing two runs off of three hits. Quaney, on the other hand, was handed the loss in his 2.2 frames of action. He surrendered four runs off of four hits.

UNLV starter Tevita Gerber went 6.0 innings and earned a no-decision after he limited the Hawkeyes to two runs off of four hits.

In game two, the Hawkeyes pushed out to a 3-0 lead through four frames. They got an RBI double from Adams followed by a run off a throwing error in the third and, an inning later, Boe had a run-scoring single.

UNLV drew even in the fifth with three runs coming from De La Trinidad and Nick Ames. De La Trinidad had a two-out, two-run double that plated Rodriguez and Vince Taormina. Ames followed with an RBI single to right to score De La Trinidad.

Iowa pulled back ahead -- 4-3 -- in the bottom of the fifth with help from a wild pitch thrown by reliever Blaze Bohall.

The two sides would remain separated by one run until the eighth when the Rebels scored three times. Kyle Isbel evened the score at 4-all with a bunt single. Ames and Jones followed a little bit later with a sacrifice fly and an RBI bunt single that wound up giving UNLV a two-run cushion at 6-4.

Unfortunately, the lead was short lived as Iowa was able to string together three straight hits culminating with a two-run, game-tying double from Boe, who later scored the would-be winning run off a fielding error two batters later.

Iowa's Shane Ritter (2-1) was credited with the win in 2.0 innings of relief. Ritter held the Rebels scoreless in his stint that saw him allow two hits and one walk against one strikeout.

Bryan Menendez (1-1) was stuck with the loss after 1.0 inning of work. Menendez allowed three runs off of three hits.

Rebel baseball tickets can be purchased online and in-advance for $5 at UNLVTickets.com. Tickets purchased at the gate are $8 for adults, $6 for senior/faculty/staff, while kids 12 and under as well as UNLV students are free of charge.
