Rebels Unable To Recover From Early Deficit

Box Score

PHOENIX (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team suffered a 5-3 loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils Tuesday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The host Sun Devils (13-18) led 4-0 after two innings and added a fifth tally in the fourth before the Rebels (12-23) could muster any offense. UNLV managed to score twice in the fifth and once more in the sixth, but that was as close as the squad would get in the midweek affair.

The Sun Devils jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off a sacrifice fly from Lyle Lin. They upped their lead to two off a solo homer from Tyler Williams to open the second. The margin grew to four later in the frame off a wild pitch and another sacrifice fly â€" this one by Gage Canning.

ASU added an insurance run in the fifth off an RBI single from Carter Aldrete, which came after Williams had reached via a walk and moved into scoring position with a stolen base.

UNLV's bullpen silenced the Sun Devils the remainder of the game with four scoreless innings of relief from the trio of Andrew Schultz (two innings), Blaze Bohall (one) and Bryan Menendez (one). In all, they struck out four against no walks and three hits.

The Rebel offense was able to come alive in the fifth against ASU starter Eli Lingos (4-3). Cooper Esmay got things started with a one-out double down the left-field line. Austin Anderson and Kyle Isbel then delivered back-to-back run-scoring hits with a triple to deep center field and a single to left-center, respectively.

The Scarlet & Gray scored, once more, when Justin Jones came around after initially reaching off a bunt single. Jones made his way to second off a wild pitch uncorked by ASU reliever Eder Erives, who had just been summoned from the bullpen to take over for Lingos. Jones eventually scored two batters later when ASU's left fielder misplayed a fly ball.

Lingos was credited with the win in 5.1 innings of work. He allowed three runs (two earned) off of seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Erives, who struck out seven against two walks, picked up his third save of the year after tossing 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.

UNLV's Paul Richy (1-3) was handed the loss after he gave up four runs (three earned) off of six hits and one walk. Richy was followed by Corey Wilson, who allowed one run off of three hits, in 1.1 innings of relief.

The Rebels return to Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium for a Mountain West series against the San Diego State Aztecs that will run Thursday through Saturday. Promotionally speaking, Friday night's affair is being billed as "Polynesian Night" with a free tailgate with complimentary Hawaiian food prior to the game as well as free Hawaiian-themed t-shirts for the first 400 fans through the gate and $1 beers for the first 600 pours courtesy of Miller-Coors and the UNLV Baseball Club. Saturday's contest is "Bark in the Park," and fans can bring their dogs to the stadium; however, a liability waiver must be filled out upon entry.

Fans can purchase tickets for $5 online and in advance at UNLVTickets.com. Tickets purchased at the Wilson Stadium box office are $8 for adults, $6 for senior/faculty/staff, while kids 12 and under as well as UNLV students are free.

NOTES: Ernie De La Trinidad and Ames extended their reached-base streak to 28 and 23 games, respectively.
