ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (14-27) lost its second straight game at Santa Ana Star Field on Saturday afternoon, falling to New Mexico (22-16-1) 13-4 in the second game of the series.

"It was kind of a repeat from yesterday, as we were chasing from the early innings on," head coach Stan Stolte said. "With two pitchers out this week (Quaney III and Schultz), it makes it even tougher to stay within striking distance. We are now at the point of throwing position players just to find someone who can come out of the pen and compete. When you can't throw strikes and get squared up consistently, as a pitcher, it's hard to be effective."

The Rebels opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Ernie De La Trinidad reached base after being hit by a pitch then stole second and scored when Justin Jones ripped a single into right field.

The lead was short lived as New Mexico hit its first of three home runs on the day in the home half of opening frame. The first inning homer was of the three-run variety, giving the Lobos a 3-1 lead.

UNLV cut into the lead in the top of the second inning when Corey Pool scored on a Kyle Isbel sacrifice fly, but UNM extended its lead with another three-run shot in the bottom half of the inning.

New Mexico added single tallies in the third and fourth innings before the Rebel De La Trinidad hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning. The Lobos responded by plating a single run in the home half of the fifth.

UNLV plated another run in the top of the sixth when Corey Pool hit a laser through the right side of the infield, scoring Bryson Stott from third.

The Lobos hit their final homer of the day in the bottom half of the seventh inning and added three more runs in the eighth inning to wrap up the scoring.

The Rebels' Tevita Gerber (3-6) was saddled loss after allowing nine runs on hits in 4.1 innings of work. He recorded one strikeout to go with three walks in the outing. Paul Richy, Max Smith and Cameron Sepede all made relief appearances in the game.

From the plate UNLV was led by De La Trinidad as he finished 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. He also scored two runs and collected a stolen base. Jones also finished with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Jack Zoellner led UNM by going 3-for-5 with five RBI, two doubles and a home run. Beau Capanna and Carl Stajduhar also finished with multiple hits as they each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Johnathon Tripp (3-1) earned the win after allowing four runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings of work. He recorded three strikeouts while allowing one walk.

UNLV will look to avoid being swept on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. PT. Junior Garrett Pool is slated to start for the Rebels, while New Mexico has not announced a starter for the series finale. Fans can watch the action live on UNLVRebels.com/videos thanks to the Mountain West Network.
