Rebels Complete Midweek Sweep With Wednesday's Win

Box Score

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team completed its two-game sweep of the Portland Pilots with a 4-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels (16-28) staked themselves to a 1-0 lead after the first inning and added runs in the third and sixth, while a trio of pitchers limited the Pilots (8-32-1) to only one run for the second straight day.

UNLV starting pitcher Paul Richy (2-3) threw seven innings to earn his second win of the season and, more impressively, only faced four batters over the minimum. Richy retired the Pilots in order in four of his seven frames of action and left three of those four on base. His only blemish came in the seventh when he allowed a home run to Mike Hicks.

Relief pitchers Blaze Bohall and Bryan Menendez (four saves) threw the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, for UNLV. Both threw a scoreless inning against Portland Tuesday night; however, Menendez's appearance Wednesday was in a save situation.

"Our pitchers did a great job today, and we only walked one batter in the past two games," said head coach Stan Stolte. "We had some poor situational hitting a couple of times during the game, and that can't happen. Our guys are tired and a little beat up after a real tough month, but they showed some character the past couple of days."

The Rebels were able to score all four of their runs in the low-scoring affair after two outs had been recorded. The scoring began in the first when Ernie De La Trinidad and Justin Jones connected on back-to-back, two-out hits. De La Trinidad reached on a single and then stole second before Jones doubled down the right-field line.

De La Trinidad factored in the scoring in the third inning, as well. He led off the frame with a walk and, eventually, found his way to third base after he stole second and advancement off a throwing error. He made his way back to the plate when Portland's shortstop misplayed a grounder hit by Bryson Stott, who later stole second and scored off an RBI single by Nick Ames.

UNLV added an insurance tally in the sixth with a two-out, RBI single from Payton Squier. Kyle Isbel scored off the base hit after he had initially reached via a fielder's choice.

Portland's Christian Peters (0-1) was saddled with the loss after throwing the first two innings of the game. Peters allowed one run off of three hits with two walks against one strikeout. He was one of six pitchers used by the Pilots in the affair.

The Rebels will hit the road this weekend for three, nonconference games against the Seattle Redhawks at Bannerwood Baseball Park in Bellevue. The series begins Friday night (5:00 pm) and continues Saturday (5:00 pm) and Sunday (2:00 pm).

UNLV will resume Mountain West play at home against the Fresno State Bulldogs May 5-7.

NOTES: De La Trinidad extended his reached-base streak to 37 games … With two hits apiece, Jones and Squier recorded their 17th and 16th multiple-hit games this season, respectively.
