RENO, Nevada (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team suffered a 4-3 loss to the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack in game one of their Mountain West series Friday night at Peccole Park. The Rebels (18-33, 8-17 MW) led 3-0 after their sixth-inning at-bat, but they were unable to maintain that advantage as the host Wolf Pack (16-31, 10-14 MW) came to life late in the game.

The Scarlet & Gray jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the second pitch of the contest when Kyle Isbel took a 1-0 offering from UNR starter Trevor Charpie over the fence in left-center field.

The score did not change until the sixth when UNLV got back-to-back, two-out run-scoring hits from Cody Howard and Bryson Stott while UNR countered with a solo home run from Grant Fennell off Rebel starter Alan Strong to open the bottom half of the inning.

UNR erased its two-run deficit in the seventh with an RBI double from Cole Krzmarzick and an RBI single from Jordan Pearce. Strong was charged with both runs although the second tally occurred after relief pitcher Blaze Bohall had entered the game.

The Wolf Pack threatened in the eighth by getting a runner to third with two outs, but the threat was nullified when Bohall induced a pop up to third base. UNR; however, capitalized on its opportunity in the ninth. Krzmarzick got things started with a single off UNLV reliever Bryan Menendez (2-2), who managed to retire the next two batters. Unfortunately, Menendez issued three straight walks to Fennell, Mike Echavia and Kaleb Foster that brought the game to an end.

"This was an evenly played, well-fought game that was a tough one to lose," said head coach Stan Stolte. "I thought both starting pitchers battled their tails off in tough, cold conditions. We competed hard, but we just didn't do enough offensively. We've got a tough task ahead of us tomorrow. We're facing arguably the best pitcher â€" Mark Nowaczewski â€" in the Conference right now, but we'll show up ready to go."

The Rebels were led offensively by Howard's three-hit night that also featured one RBI and one run scored. Isbel also knocked one run in and scored once. Payton Squier scored once while Stott had one RBI.

UNR's Even McMahan (3-4) picked up the win in two innings of relief work. McMahan allowed only two hits and one walk.

Strong went 6.1 innings for a no decision, and held the Wolf Pack hitless through four. He struck out nine against three runs, four hits and two walks.

Menendez was stuck with the loss after he was only able to get two outs in the ninth. He allowed one run off of one hit and three walks.

UNLV and UNR return to Peccole Park Saturday at 6:00 pm for the second game of the series. Not only do these three games count towards the MW's standings, but they are also part of the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold, the head-to-head athletic and academic competition between the state's two NCAA Division I programs. To date, the 2016-17 edition sits deadlocked at 21-all with baseball and women's outdoor track & field left to be decided this weekend.

NOTES: Ernie De La Trinidad's reached-base streak came to a close at 43 games … He entered Friday's affair tied for the second-longest active streak.
