RENO, Nevada (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team salvaged the final game of the three-game, Mountain West series with a 9-1 victory over the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park. The Rebels (19-34, 9-18 MW) erupted for six runs in the third inning which was more than enough run support for starting pitcher Paul Richy, who held the Wolf Pack (17-32, 11-15 MW) to only one run.

Backed by Sunday's complete-game performance, Richy (4-3) has now won his last two starts and three of his last four. Against UNR, he faced three batters over the minimum, one of those scored and the other two were left on base â€" one each in the second and fourth. He retired the side in seven of nine innings, and five of those took place consecutively from the fifth through ninth. In all, he gave up seven hits and struck out one against no walks in 103 pitches. Additionally, he induced three double plays.

"Paul Richy was great today," said head coach Stan Stolte. "He just pounded the zone with all three pitches. It was a (Greg) Maddux-like performance. Offensively, we had a much better approach at the plate. It was a good all-round game by everyone."

The Scarlet & Gray opened the scoring in the third with a bases-loaded walk issued to Payton Squier by UNR starter Riley Ohl (3-3). The four-pitch free pass came after Vince Taormina (single), Cooper Esmay (hit-by-pitch) and Kyle Isbel (single) reached base safely in three straight at-bats. Justin Jones and Cody Howard kept the offense revving with each knocking in a runner in back-to-back, one-out at-bats. The former singled through the right side of the infield to plate Esmay while the latter reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Isbel.

Bryson Stott continued the third with a four-pitch walk that, subsequently, ended Ohl's day on the mound. Grant Ford was summoned from the bullpen, but watched one run come in off a passed ball and then two more off a double to left-center field by Nick Ames.

The Rebels upped their lead to seven in the fourth off a sacrifice fly from Payton Squier that scored Esmay, who had initially reached via walk.

UNR managed to produce its only run of the contest in the home half of the fourth when Jordan Pearce and Grant Fennell combined for a double and an RBI single, respectively.

Ames tacked on two more runs in the seventh with a two-run home run to right-center. Stott scored on the round tripper after he had connected on a two-out single.

For the game, Ames went 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run. Squier knocked in two RBI and scored once despite only having one official at-bat and three walks. Stott and Esmay led the team in scoring with two runs apiece.

Ohl was saddled with the loss in only 2.2 innings of work. He allowed six runs (five earned) off of three hits and three walks. His teammate, Ford, was touched for three runs off of five hits in 4.1 innings of relief. Ty Pennington and Evan McMahan tossed one scoreless inning apiece for UNR.

The Rebels return to Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium for their final regular-season series of the year, a three-game set vs. the San Jose State Spartans. UNLV and SJSU get underway Thursday night at 6:05 pm. Friday's affair is also slated for 6:05 pm, while Saturday's finale is at 2:05 pm.

NOTES: UNLV improved to 14-7 when it scores six or more runs in a game … UNLV improved to 16-11 when it limits the opposition to five runs or less and 7-1 when it only allows two or less … Richy is the third Rebel to throw a complete game â€" all on the road, as teammates Larry Quaney and Garrett Poole did so against San Jose State (March 4/nine innings) and Seattle (April 30/eight).
