July 18, 2017 2016-17 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award: Release | List
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - One day after 75 Rebel student-athletes were named to the Spring Academic All-Mountain West Team, UNLV had 49 student-athletes earn the 2016-17 MW Scholar-Athlete Award, the league announced. The Scarlet & Gray had a minimum of 43 recipients claim the award in 12 of the past 14 years, including 10 straight dating back to the 2007-08 academic year.
The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in a MW-sponsored sport.
The women's swimming & diving team and its nine representatives paced UNLV's contingent. Softball and volleyball followed with eight and seven awardees, respectively. Women's soccer and women's track & field had four apiece while 17 more came from baseball (three), men's tennis (three), women's tennis (three), cross country (two), men's golf (two), women's golf (two), football (one) and women's basketball (one).
Overall, a league-record 756 student-athletes were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes, including 77 individuals with a perfect 4.0 GPA. The 756 honorees surpassed the previous high of 734 in 2015-16.
