In celebration of the 50th Year of Rebel Football, UNLV will wear a special helmet design inspired by arguably the best team in school history during its season-opening game vs. Howard University September 2.

The silver helmet will feature a decal in the same font that the team wore from 1982-86 but without the middle striping because of the current squad's popular "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sticker located on the back. Head coach Tony Sanchez put his own spin on the throwback look by making both the "Rebels" script and facemask chrome colored instead of simple red.

Wearing a similar look, the 1984 Rebels were led by future College Football Hall of Famer Randall Cunningham at quarterback and punter. That UNLV squad went undefeated in league play to win the Big West Conference (then known as the PCAA) and went on to defeat Toledo 30-13 in the California Bowl held in Fresno.

This year's team will also wear a commemorative sticker on the back of its helmets throughout the season featuring the official 50 Years of Rebel Football logo designed as a courtesy by Mike Mason of CatalystCreativ.

The 1984 helmet design is also part of UNLV's recently debuted set of pocket-sized helmets that are only available as a gift to football season-ticket buyers (one per account) as a show of appreciation for their support.

Produced by Riddell, the unique set features three different helmet designs from Coach Sanchez's first two seasons along with three throwback helmets from previous decades.

Current and new account holders can collect their helmet set at a Season Ticket Holder Appreciation Event scheduled around the team's practice on campus Sunday evening. Invitations and RSVP information to the special event were emailed Friday. The helmet sets are also available for pickup at the Thomas & Mack Center Box Office during regular business hours and at the Rebel Block Party before the season-opening game September 2, which kicks off at 6 p.m. PT.
