Powell Named Outstanding Rebel Of The Week

Jan. 24, 2018
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's basketball junior Katie Powell has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday. This is the second time in the last three weeks Powell has earned the honor.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

Powell, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, averaged 18 points per game in leading the Lady Rebels to 2-0 week with a 68-66 road win at New Mexico and a 56-52 home victory against Colorado State.

At New Mexico, Powell scored 18 points and tied her season high with three three-pointers to go along with six rebounds, giving UNLV a second straight win on the Lobos' home court. The road victory also snapped New Mexico's 13-game home win streak, which had been the ninth-longest active streak in the nation.

Against Colorado State, the junior forward scored 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting and a perfect 4-of-4 at the line. In a tight game in the fourth quarter, the Rams twice took a two-point lead and both times Powell responded with baskets to tie the game. After CSU took a 50-47 advantage with 3:21 to play, Powell answered with a drive down the lane for a layup with 2:57 to go, then hit a turnaround jumper from behind the free throw line at 1:49 on the clock for four straight points, giving UNLV the lead for good. The victory snapped UNLV's eight-game losing streak to the Rams.

Powell earned her first career Mountain West Player of the Week honor for the performance, marking the first time a Lady Rebel has received the honor since Dakota Gonzalez on Feb. 13, 2017.

The Lady Rebels return to action tonight against Fresno State at Cox Pavilion for a 6 p.m. tip.
