Zhu Named Outstanding Rebel Of The Week

Jan. 31, 2018
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's tennis junior Aiwen Zhu has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

Zhu, a native of Wuxi, China, went a combined 4-0 at the elite ITA Kickoff Weekend event, which included an upset of the nation's No. 27-ranked singles player from host Cal, Anna Bright, in straight sets (7-6, 6-4) on Friday. In Zhu's second singles match of the weekend, the junior defeated Madison Harrison of Mississippi State, 6-3, 6-2, on Saturday.

In doubles competition, Zhu teamed up with En-Pei Huang to win at No. 1 doubles, helping UNLV shock the No. 11 Golden Bears and win the doubles point in the eventual 4-3 team loss. The pair also won at the No. 1 doubles spot against Mississippi State to help the Rebels take the doubles point and eventually upset the higher-seeded Bulldogs 4-3.

With the two individual wins, Zhu improved to 14-1 in her career playing at the No. 1 singles position.

Zhu and the Rebels are back in action this weekend, taking on Arizona State and Gonzaga on Friday and Saturday, respectively, in Tempe, Arizona.
