Rebels Drop Overtime Heartbreaker At Wyoming

UNLV scores late to send the match to OT, but Cowgirls get the game winner in the first OT.

LARAMIE, WY (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer was almost able to complete a comeback at Wyoming Sunday, but ultimately fell to the Cowgirls 2-1 in overtime in Laramie. The Cowgirls struck first in the opening half and held the 1-0 lead for a majority of the game, but the Rebels didn't give up, drawing a penalty kick in the 85th minute on a free kick from just outside the box. Senior Kaila Brinkman nailed the PK with under five minutes left in regulation to send the game to OT, but Wyoming found the net as the first overtime was winding down to take the game.

Heading into the contest, the Rebels held the fifth spot in the standings with the top six teams advancing to the Mountain West postseason tournament. Depending on Sunday's results, the Rebels should still be within that group with one game remaining in the regular season. The loss drops UNLV to 10-6-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the Mountain West, while Wyoming improved to 11-3-4 overall and 6-2-2.

THE TURNING POINT: After evening the score at one, UNLV seemed to have the momentum but Wyoming came out aggressive in the first overtime. With under two remaining in the first 10-minute extra period, the Cowgirls spurred an attack that resulted in the golden goal game winner for the home team and the Rebel comeback was stopped short.

STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV was out-shot 16-6 for the game, with the six shots being its second lowest output of the season.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Brinkman's free kick in the 85th minute was a perfect ball into the box that drew the foul and yellow card on Wyoming, so it was fitting that she took the penalty kick to tie the game up.

UP NEXT: The Rebels will close out the regular season against in-state rival UNR in the newly named Silver State Cup presented by Nevada Donor Network and Laborers Union on Friday, October 26 in Reno. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. PT.
