Rebels End Season With Fourth Straight Win Over UNR

UNLV downs the Wolf Pack 2-1 Friday night in Reno, but just misses the postseason tournament

RENO, Nevada (UNLVRebels.com) -Ā UNLV women's soccer ended its regular season Friday night in Reno with its fourth straight win over in-state rival UNR, the latest being a 2-1 victory against the Wolf Pack. The game-winner came on the foot of senior Kaila Brinkman in the 34th minute almost immediately after the Wolf Pack had evened the score at one.

Unfortunately, the win alone was not enough to secure a spot in the Mountain West Championship as the Rebels chances depended on a few other outcomes in the league's rivalry games Friday. With Fresno State playing San Jose State to a draw and Colorado College beating Air Force, UNLV ended up in a tie for sixth with Colorado College, who owned the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Rebels. This is the second straight year the Scarlet and Gray have tied for sixth but missed out on the postseason tournament due to tiebreaker rules.

UNLV finished the year 11-6-3 overall and 5-4-2 in Mountain West play. Friday also marked the end of the Rebel careers for four seniors - Caitlyn Kreutz, Amanda Galbraith, Kaila Brinkman and Isabella (Bella) Myers.

THE TURNING POINT:Ā UNR tied the score at one at the 33:05 mark, but the Rebels didn't panic, with junior McKenna Sullivan finding Brinkman, who buried the ball in the left corner from about 23 yards out at the 33:19 mark to give UNLV the lead for good.

STAT OF THE GAME:Ā UNR gifted the Rebels the lead on an own goal in the third minute.

REBEL OF THE GAME:Ā Brinkman scored a career-high seven goals as a redshirt senior this year, with her seventh being the important game-winner over the Wolf Pack.

QUOTABLE:Ā "I'm really proud of the team's performance tonight. Reno is a tough place to play with the turf and field size, so we changed up our formation and style a bit. The players bought in and got the job done. I'm glad our four seniors got a win in their last game as Rebels against our rivals."Ā
- Head Coach Chris Shaw
