Shakur Juiston's second double-double of the season and Kris Clyburn's game-high 14 points led UNLV to 76-71 win over Southern Utah.
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Senior forward Shakur Juiston scored 11 points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and senior guard Kris Clyburn scored a game-high 14 points to lead the UNLV men's basketball team (4-1) to a 76-71 win over Southern Utah Friday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.
It was the Runnin' Rebels' fourth straight win this season and 25th in a row over the Thunderbirds.
Southern Utah (3-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Jacob Calloway's 14 points. Former Runnin' Rebel Dwayne Morgan had 12 points.
THE TURNING POINT: Tied at 55 with about seven minutes to play, UNLV went on a 9-0 run to take a 64-55 lead with four minutes to go. Southern Utah cut its deficit to just three points with under 30 seconds to play, but Clyburn made a couple of free throws to seal the win for the Runnin' Rebels.
RUNNIN' REBEL OF THE GAME: Juiston's 16 rebounds are his most in a game since the last time UNLV faced Southern Utah. He also had 16 boards vs. the Thunderbirds on Nov. 25, 2017. His career high in rebounds is 19, which came against Rice last season.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV out-rebounded Southern Utah, 53-29. The Runnin' Rebels have out-rebounded each of their five opponents this season.
QUOTABLE: "Southern Utah really played hard and came in with a lot of emotion, intensity and enthusiasm. They played together and executed what their coach wanted. I thought they did a really good job and were a formidable foe tonight. We (the coaches) knew we were up for a challenge, however I'm not sure the players knew what they were in store for and I think they got a little shell-shocked at the other team's energy. It's a great opportunity to win and get a lot of lessons - probably more lessons than I wanted. I always want to make incremental improvement and I felt like we did in some areas but in other areas we either went back or stayed the same, which is a little disappointing. But we got the win and now we have to prepare for two really tough teams next week." - UNLV Head Coach Marvin Menzies
