Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Season Ends In WAC Tournament

Rebels fall to second-seed UTRGV 4-1.

SEATTLE, Washington (UNLVRebels.com) - UTRGV scored a pair of goals in each half to end the season for the UNLV men's soccer team Wednesday night, as the seventh-seeded Rebels (10-10-1) fell to the second-seed Vaqueros 4-1 in the second game of the 2018 WAC First Round at Championship Field on the Seattle University campus.

The Rebels started out with an early 1-0 lead less than 12 minutes into the contest. UTRGV would counter 13 minutes later with a tying score in the 25th minute, the start of four unanswered goals.

THE TURNING POINT: It looked like the game would be tied going into halftime, until Rooby Dalusma slipped past the Rebel defense to collected a deflected pass and he quickly sent a shot into the goal to put UTRGV up 2-1 in the 42nd minute. That allowed UTRGV to play back the rest of the way, forcing UNLV to attempt to score through a packed in defense.

STAT OF THE GAME: UTRGV was efficient with its shots Wednesday, as six of its 10 shots were on goal, and four of those six shots resulted in goals. UNLV meanwhile held the overall shot lead 11-10, but had just three total shots on goal over the 90 minutes.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Playing in his final collegiate soccer game, senior Bay Kurtz scored the game's first goal that initially put the Rebels ahead 1-0. The play started when Nico Clasen's blast of a shot from 30 yards out hit the crossbar before bouncing back into play. Kurtz was there to kick the ball back into the left post for the score. Kurtz would finish with a team-high three shots, nearly missing on his third attempt in the second half.

QUOTABLE: "The forwards for UTRGV, they are some of the strongest players we've played against this year, they were a handful for us all night long. I have great respect as well for what UTRGV has done as a program over the past few years to get where they are now. As for our first goal, I was very happy with how we earned that, and we had several more chances tonight, we just didn't finish, while they did. Looking overall at the season, we came into the year having lost 12 seniors so it was going to be an adjustment, but with the pieces we have returning I'm excited for the future of UNLV soccer."
- Head coach Rich Ryerson

REBEL NOTES:
* UNLV leading scorer Marco Gonzalez, who ranks first in the WAC in total shots taken, was limited to zero shot attempts Wednesday night
* Clasen was credited with an assist on the Kurtz goal, which ties for the second-most assists in a season ever at UNLV, and extended the team freshman record he already set during the regular season.
* UNLV fell to 8-4-1 for the year when it outshot its opponent.
