LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's basketball junior Katie Powell has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday. This is the second time in the last three weeks and third time in the last five weeks Powell has earned the honor.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Powell, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, averaged 24.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 3.0 to lead the Lady Rebels to a 2-0 week with a road win over San José State (80-57) on Jan. 31 and a home win against Boise State (77-54) on Feb. 3. Overall, Powell was responsible for 31.2% of UNLV's total points for the week.
On Wednesday at San José State, Powell poured in 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting while adding eight rebounds in the blowout victory against the Spartans.
In the home win against Boise State, the junior scored a game-high of 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting with three assists. Against the Broncos, Powell also shined on defense, coming up with 10 defensive rebounds to earn her 11th double-double of the season. She also posted a career-high five steals.
The two victories brought the Lady Rebels' season record to 13-8, including 8-2 in Mountain West play, and lifted UNLV into first place in the league standings, marking the first time in program history the team has had sole possession of first place during the regular season.
The Lady Rebels return to action tonight against the Wolf Pack of UNR in a Governor's Series showdown at Cox Pavilion at 6 p.m.
