PHOENIX (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 19 UNLV baseball team (19-3) jumped back into the win column with its 10-3 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils (11-10) Tuesday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The Rebels broke open a 3-all game with four runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to outdistance themselves from their Pac-12 foe.
Kyle Isbel had two hits in the contest and both provided instant offense for the Scarlet & Gray. Isbel smashed a one-out, three-run home run in the third inning and in the eighth he broke a 3-all stalemate with an RBI single.
Max Smith and Nick Ames capitalized on bases-loaded situations, as the former's came two batters after Isbel's run-scoring singe the eight, while the latter's was in the ninth. Smith's hit went down the right-field line for three bases and three runs. Ames' went for a double, but also resulted in three RBI.
The Rebels used five pitchers in the affair who combined to strikeout nine against three runs (two earned) off of eight hits and two walks. Chase Maddux got the start and allowed two runs (one earned) in 4.0 innings. Casey Miller was the first reliever out of the bullpen and he gave up one run in 1.2 innings. The trio of Blaze Bohall, Austin Anderson (1-0) and Conner Woods struck out four and held the Sun Devils scoreless, while only giving up two hits in 3.1 innings.
THE TURNING POINT: After only notching one hit over the fourth through seventh innings, the Rebels scattered three in the eighth. Two of those hits resulted in runs with an RBI single from Isbel and a two-run triple by Smith.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Kyle Isbel knocked in four RBI and scored two runs after hitting a three-run homer in the third and an RBI single in the eighth.
QUOTABLE: "This was an all-around great, team win," said head coach Stan Stolte. "We were getting outhit, like 6-2, as late as the seventh, but out kids never pressed. (Chase) Maddux, (Casey) Miller and (Blaze) Bohall got the ball to (Austin) Anderson and (Conner) Woods who both were very good to close it out. (Kyle) Isbel just keeps showing why he's one of the premier players on the West Coast. We're going to enjoy this, but we need to get ready for a very good San Diego State team coming to town this weekend."
STAT OF THE GAME: Six of UNLV's RBI came from a pair of native Arizonans, Max Smith and Nick Ames, who had three-run hits -- a triple and a double -- in the eighth and ninth innings.
