Men's Tennis Falls In Finale

Box Score

RENO (UNLVRebels.com) - Playing its final regular-season match of the season, the UNLV men's tennis team lost to in-state rival UNR 4-1 Sunday in a match pushed indoors because of high winds.

The Rebels fell to 13-9 overall and finished 3-4 in Mountain West play while the Wolf Pack improved to 14-6/3-3. UNR also earned a leg up toward earning three points in the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold while UNLV is left to hope for a rematch in the postseason.

Playing off-campus at the Lakeridge Tennis Club, the Wolf Pack dominated doubles and took a 1-0 lead after wins on both completed courts.

UNLV needed to win four of six singles matches and, despite using a staggered system with just four courts available, the Rebels looked on track for the comeback after winning the first set in all four matches. The hosts, however, rallied to win the second set on three of those courts and took the win in all three to clinch the victory. That included at the top of the lineup where Julien Evrard upset No. 89 Alexandr Cozbivnov, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. The final two matches were early in the first set when they were halted.

REBEL OF THE MATCH: Courtney Lock earned his team its lone point, 6-2, 6-2 over Kostya Nesterenko on court two. It marked the fifth win in the senior's last six outings.

NET NOTE: Cozbinov, ranked 89th, saw his six-match winning streak snapped. The senior finished 5-2 vs. MW opponents this spring with both losses coming in three-setters played indoors.

QUOTABLE: "The Wolf Pack played outstanding in doubles, which gave us no room for error in singles. We then let a couple of matches slip away after being in good position at every spot."

-UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will wait to hear its seeding and opponent for the 2018 Mountain West Championship, which is set for April 26-28 on the campus of San Diego State.
