MORGANTOWN, W.V. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 26 UNLV baseball team (23-11) suffered a 7-5 loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers (13-15) Sunday afternoon to close out the three-game, nonconference series at Monongalia County Ballpark. The Rebels held a short-lived one-run lead after the top of the first, but the Mountaineers flipped the game in their favor in the bottom half of the frame en route to the five-run win.
Just like the first two contests of the series, UNLV had no problem scoring in the first inning. The Rebels got back-to-back singles by Bryson Stott and Dillon Johnson to put runners on the corners for Kyle Isbel who knocked in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly. WVU countered in its half of the first with a single from starting pitcher Braden Zarbinsky (2-1) and a two-run homer from Marques Inman three batters later.
The Mountaineers pushed their lead to two runs, 3-1, in the third when they got a fielder's choice groundout after they loaded the bases off two singles and a walk. The home team's advantage grew to five runs when they scored two in the fifth and two more in the sixth to counter a one-run tally by UNLV in the fifth, which was the result of a throwing error.
The Rebels were able to cut into their deficit in the seventh with three runs off a fielding error, a walk and a fielder's choice grounder â€" all of which came with the bases loaded. Unfortunately, the offense was unable to produce get any closer the remainder of the affair.
THE TURNING POINT: Moments after UNLV pulled within one, 3-2, of WVU, the Mountaineers scattered four singles that produced two runs and extended their lead to three at 5-2.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Seth Mullis went 1-for-3 with one double and a walk that accounted for two of UNLV's five runs.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV's 2-3-4 hitters knocked in all four of the team's RBI despite only going 1-for-11 at the plate. Isbel had two RBI come off of a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk, while Johnson and Rodriguez's were off an error and a fielder's choice, respectively.
REBEL NOTES:
- Garrett Poole (1-1) took the loss in 4.1 innings of work after he allowed five runs off of eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
- Blaze Bohall's appearance in the fifth inning was his 88th as a Rebel, which ties him with Rebel alum Ben Scheinbaum (2001-04) for the second-most appearances in UNLV baseball history. Koji Pupo sits first with 92 appearances from 2004-07.
- The Rebels are 16-6 in nonconference contests and 7-5 in Mountain West games.

The ASU affair is being billed as $2 Tuesday with $2 hot dogs and $2 sodas, while beer is discounted by $2. Additionally, the first 250 fans through the stadium gates will get the first of three special edition commemorative coins.
