LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team returned home for its final regular season series after a historic sweep in Fresno last weekend and seemed to pick up right where it left off. The Rebels jumped out to an early lead over Colorado State (25-20, 9-13) Thursday night at Eller Media Stadium and then closed it out with yet another strong performance in the circle by senior Janine Petmecky for a fourth straight victory - their longest win streak in the Mountain West this season.
UNLV has now won nine of its last 11 conference games after a stretch of seven straight league losses. The victory over the Rams was its 30th overall this season, marking the most for the program since the Rebels went 33-20 in 2010. The 12 MW wins are the most since the Scarlet and Gray won 15 in 2014 and this comes after the team was 3-6 through the first three conference series.
Petmecky, the reigning USA Softball National Player of the Week and MW Player and Pitcher of the Week, threw her 14th complete game of the season for her 19th win overall, which moves her alone into second on the single-season wins list. She allowed two runs on a home run, five hits, two walks and seven strikeouts to go along with a 3-for-4 night at the plate with two runs scored.
Overall, the offense spread the wealth around with six different Rebels registering at least one hit, while three different Rebels knocked in at least one run, led by freshman Samantha Diaz with two RBI.
THE TURNING POINT: For the fourth consecutive game UNLV took control early by scoring in the first inning. Petmecky led off the game with a single, which was followed by an infield single by sophomore Justine Federe to put two on with nobody out. That brought up freshman Mia Trejo, who has been UNLV's top hitter during conference play, and she delivered once again with an RBI double for the first run. With two outs and Trejo and Federe at second and third, Diaz sent a double to left field to score two more to make it 3-0 in the opening frame. The Rebels added two runs in the fourth before a two-run Ram home run in the fifth ended the shutout bid, but that was as close as CSU would get.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Petmecky has now won her last five starts and is two wins shy of matching the most wins in a single-season by a UNLV pitcher. She added seven more strikeouts on the evening - including striking out the side to close it out in the seventh - for a total of 136, which ranks eighth all-time in a single season. As usual, she didn't just do it in the circle as her leadoff single sparked the offense in the first and she came around to score twice to go along with three hits.
STAT OF THE GAME: After going 8-for-10 last weekend in Fresno, Petmecky started the game 3-for-3 and went 3-for-4 on the night. She is now 11-of-14 with two walks over her last 16 plate appearances.
