LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball's recent tear continued Friday at Eller Media Stadium as the Rebels dominated Colorado State (25-21, 9-14) 11-2 in five innings in game two to win their fifth straight game and 10th of their last 12. The victory secures UNLV's fourth straight Mountain West series win and fifth overall of the season - its most series wins since 2014.
At 31-17, UNLV has its first 30-win season since 2010, while head coach Kristie Fox matches former Rebel head coach Pete Manarino for most wins in their first year at the helm. Manarino had 31 in 2009. The 13 conference wins are the most since the 2014 finished the year with 15.
For a fifth consecutive game, the Scarlet and Gray scored in the opening frame, but this time it was an offensive explosion. Like she had done for the past four games, senior Janine Petmecky led off the game with a hit - this one a double down the left field line and the Rebels were off and running. UNLV batted around in the inning and scored a total of eight runs on seven hits and a Ram error to essentially take the game before it even got started.
Petmecky went on to hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third - her seventh of the year and sixth in the last nine games - for a 3-for-3, four-RBI day. Sophomore Breana Burke got the start in the circle and pitched three innings for her second straight win, while fellow sophomore Charlie Masterson closed it out with 2.0 scoreless frames.
THE TURNING POINT: It's starting to sound like a broken record because it's happening so often, but UNLV took control in the first inning for a fifth consecutive contest and never looked back. Petmecky again sparked the offense with the leadoff double and once the Ram pitching staff struggled to find the strike zone with two straight walks to load the bases, the Rebels capitalized. Senior catcher Brooke Stover plated the first run with an RBI single; freshman shortstop Samantha Diaz hit an infield single for the second; a ram error on a Reina Bondi grounder scored the third; a pinch-hit infield single by junior Abby Howard - her first hit and RBI of the season - scored the fourth; a Myranda Bueno single through the left side plated the fifth run; a Petmecky single scored the sixth and seventh runs; and a Justine Federe double scored the eighth and final run of the inning.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV batted around in the eight-run first inning, sending a total of 12 batters to the plate in the frame. Seven of UNLV's 11 hits came in that inning.
REBEL OF THE GAME: There aren't enough superlatives to describe what Petmecky has done over the last five games. Dating back to game one in Fresno last Friday, Petmecky has gone 14-for-17 with two walks over her last 19 plate appearances. On Friday, she came up a triple shy of hitting for the cycle after registering a double and a single in the first inning and a two-run home run in the third.
