Rebels Make History With Sweep At Fresno State

May 6, 2018

Box Score

FRESNO, California (UNLVRebels.com) - It has been a season of milestones for UNLV softball and that continued Sunday as the Rebels completed their first three-game sweep over Fresno State (30-21, 13-8) in program history with a 6-2 victory in the finale. It was also the first sweep of the season for UNLV and just the second three-game series win over the Bulldogs all-time.

Most impressively, the Rebels became the first team to sweep Fresno State in a conference series - home or away - since the Bulldogs joined the Mountain West prior to the 2013 season, while UNLV is the first team sweep a conference series from the Bulldogs in Fresno in the 37-year program history of Fresno State softball, regardless of which conference the Bulldogs were in at the time. No team had done it since FS joined NCAA D-I softball.

The victory brings UNLV's record to 29-17 overall and 11-10 in conference play, marking the most wins for the program since the 2010 squad went 33-20 and most MW wins since the team's 11 in 2015. If the Rebels can win one of their last three regular season games, they will have reached the 30-win threshold for the first time in eight years.

After a mid-conference seven-game losing streak, the Scarlet and Gray have bounced back to win eight of their last 10 league games and three straight MW series. That includes series victories on the road over the current first and second place teams - Boise State and Fresno State - as the Rebels went 5-1 against those squads.

Sunday's victory was a lot like the first two of the weekend with UNLV scoring in the first inning for the third consecutive day and the Rebel pitching staff putting in a full team effort to shut down the Bulldogs.

The Rebels didn't waste any time jumping on Fresno State freshman Danielle East in the finale. Leading off the game, Petmecky worked the count to 3-2 then sent the next pitch to right field on what looked like it would be an extra-base hit at most, but the Bulldog right fielder dove and saw the ball bounce off her glove and trickle deep into the corner in foul territory. Petmecky raced around the bases and the ball still hadn't been thrown into the infield, so Petmecky kept going all the way to home for the inside-the-park home run.

The play capped an incredible weekend for Petmecky, who is making the most of her final collegiate season. The Riverside, California, native reached base in her first 10 at-bats of the series and 10 of 12 overall as she went 8-for-10 (.800) with six runs scored, four RBI, one triple and two home runs. She didn't just do it at the plate as the right-hander pitched her 12th complete game Friday, allowing just three runs on seven hits en route to her 18th win of the season - tied for second-most in a single season. In Saturday's 4-1 victory, Petmecky hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to give the Rebels some breathing room, then entered with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, getting strikeouts to end each of the final three frames for the three-inning save. On Sunday, Petmecky got the final two outs to seal the sweep and put an exclamation mark on the weekend.

Sophomore Charlie Masterson got the start in the circle Sunday and gave up a run in the first before giving way to fellow sophomore Breana Burke. Burke was solid, holding the Bulldogs without a hit until the fifth inning and in all giving up just one run on three hits in 5.1 innings pitched before Petmecky entered to wrap it up in the seventh. Burke was credited with the win - her fourth of the season.

THE TURNING POINT: The first play of the game is rarely the turning point, but that was the case Sunday. Petmecky's inside-the-parker seemed to deflate the Bulldogs and invigorate the Rebels at the same time. The next better, two-hole hitter Justine Federe, doubled to left center and RBI machine Mia Trejo delivered again at the three spot, driving a single up the middle to score Federe from second and make it 2-0 with no outs. Fresno State played tight after that, leading to a three-error inning by the Bulldogs in the fourth to help UNLV extend its lead to 6-1. UNLV on the other hand seemed to have a pep in its step as they made several stellar plays on defense, including an inning-ending double play in the sixth to essentially squash any hope for a Fresno State comeback.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Burke, who entered the game having pitched just 19.2 innings during conference play, turned in the performance the Rebels needed. She pitched 5.1 innings in relief, limiting the Bulldogs to just one run on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

STAT OF THE GAME: The Rebels scored in the first inning all three games on the weekend, with seven of their 14 runs coming over the first two innings of each game.
