Rough Night For Rebels In WAC Opener

Box Score It was a rough outing for the UNLV men's soccer squad Saturday night, as the Rebels dropped their WAC opener by a 2-0 score to UTRGV at the UTRGV Soccer Complex. UNLV dropped to 5-4 overall, while UTRGV moved to 6-2 with its fifth straight win.

The Rebels were the ones pressing the attack early, and took the first three shots of the game, while UTRGV only had one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes. However the hosts made that shot count, as they used a counter attack to notch the first score of the game for a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. A second goal in the 55th minute gave UTRGV a 2-0 edge, which would hold up for the rest of the game.

THE TURNING POINT: UNLV attempted four shots in the first 25 minutes of the contest, but following the first goal, UTRGV moved into a more defensive gameplan, which limited the Rebels to just three total shots over the next 40 minutes of the contest.

STAT OF THE GAME: The Rebels finished with a season-low three shots on goal.

QUOTABLE:
"They (UTRGV) played their tactical game very well, they were able to convert the first goal on a counter attack and then the second off the set piece. That's how they play and they have it down very well. Very limited shots for both teams tonight, we had some chances and just couldn't convert. The makeup of the conference seems to be getting more equitable based on the scores I'm seeing this season so it's going to be an interesting year in the WAC I think."
- UNLV Head Coach Rich Ryerson

REBEL NOTES:
* UNLV's other three losses this year were all by one goal each, until Saturday night's two-goal setback.
* The Rebels have lost their last two road games at UTRGV.
* UNLV is just one win away from reaching 400 total victories in its 45 year-history.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV travels to San Diego for a Monday night matchup against the San Diego State Aztecs in a non-conference match at 7 pm at the SDSU SportsDeck.
