Rebels Shut Out Lumberjacks, Win Third Straight

UNLV scores early in both halves, records second straight shutout

FLAGSTAFF, Arizona (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer kept it rolling on the road Friday night with a 2-0 win over Northern Arizona (3-2-1) in Flagstaff. The victory is the third straight for the Scarlet and Gray and is the second consecutive shutout for a Rebel defense that hadn't held its opponent scoreless in the first five games of 2018.

UNLV (5-1-1) has just two non-conference games remaining before Mountain West play begins September 21, with Sunday's 1 p.m. match against Montana at Peter Johann Memorial Field marking its final non-league home contest.

THE TURNING POINT: For the third game in a row, UNLV jumped out to an early lead with senior forward Caitlyn Kreutz putting the Rebels up 1-0 in the 14th minute after a breakaway goal. Clinging to the 1-0 lead at the beginning of the second half, the Rebels quickly increased the cushion to two after junior midfielder Katie Ballou headed in goal on a double pass from seniors Kaila Brinkman and Amanda Galbraith in the 47th minute and UNLV never looked back.

REBEL(S) OF THE GAME: The entire UNLV defense deserves credit for limiting NAU to just seven shots, while true freshman keeper nabbed a second career shutout with five saves on the night.

STAT OF THE GAME: For the first time this season, UNLV was held under 10 shots for the game, recording a season-low eight in the game.

QUOTABLE: Head coach Chris Shaw:
"I'm very happy with the results. Flagstaff is always a tough place to play and NAU always battles hard. We got off to a great start and I felt like we defended well for 90 minutes."

UP NEXT: The Rebels return home Sunday for their last non-conference home game of 2018, hosting Montana at 1 p.m. at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

REBEL NOTES:
* The road victory is the team's second straight, with the streak coming after the Rebels had gone 0-5-1 in their last six road games dating back to last season
* This marks the first time the Rebels have recorded two straight shutout since September of last year when they beat San Diego State 1-0 on September 24 and Colorado College 3-0 on September 29
* UNLV is now 9-1-2 all-time against the Lumberjacks, having not lost to NAU since the first meeting between the two schools in 1999
* With the win, head coach Chris Shaw has now tied the program record for most wins by a head coach. Former Rebel head coach Dan Abdalla went 54-38-8 from 2000-04
* UNLV is celebrating its 20th season in program history, with the official recognition taking place on Friday, Oct. 5 as the Rebels host Fresno State
