FRESNO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team capped off its trip to the Golden State with a 3-2 win over the Fresno State Bulldogs at the Save Mart Center Saturday. The Rebels got double-doubles from
Mariena Hayden and
Shelby Capllonch in the Mountain West contest that consisted of 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11 set scores.
With the victory, the Scarlet & Gray improved to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while the Bulldogs saw their respective marks drop to 10-6 and 3-1. More impressively, the Rebel triumph halted Fresno State's five-match win streak, which had been comprised of five straight 3-0 final scores.
The Rebels were outhit by 25 points (.170 to .195); however, they owned advantages in kills (64-59) and attack attempts (194-174), but also committed six more errors (31-25). Hayden paced the Rebels offensively with her double-double – the fifth in a row – that consisted of a team-high 26 kills and 17 digs. More impressively, her 26 kills were a season best and tied a career high that she achieved twice in 2018 against Youngstown State and Utah State.
Capllonch picked up her 10th double-double of the year behind a combination of 10 kills and a team-high 21 digs, which was also a season and career high.
Macy Smith also loomed large on both sides of the net for UNLV, throwing down a career-best 13 kills as well as having a part in five assisted blocks.
Rebel setters
Antonette Rolda and
Lauryn Burt combined for 47 assists and 14 digs. Rolda fell one dig shy of reaching double-double stats with 28 assists and nine digs, while Burt had 19 assists and five digs.
TURNING POINT – FIFTH SET: Moments after Fresno State knotted the score at 9-all in the decisive fifth set, UNLV rattled off two straight points – off a Capllonch kill and a Bulldog attack error – to kickstart a 6-2 run to close out the match. The Rebels got two kills from Hayden and one from
Erin Davis to go along with another Bulldog miscue to complete the winning stretch.
