LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team closed out its 2019 regular-season home schedule with a 3-0 triumph over the San Jose State Spartans at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels were paced by senior setter
Antonette Rolda's double-double and
Mariena Hayden's 15-kill performance in the Mountain West contest claimed behind set scores of 26-24, 25-16, 25-18.
The Scarlet & Gray, which has won four straight and 13 of its last 14, improved to 17-10 on the year and 13-3 in the MW. SJSU, on the other hand, has now lost two straight and sits 10-17 overall and 5-12 in conference play.
The Rebels outhit the Spartans by only nine points (.303 to .294) despite their offense throwing down two fewer kills (39-41) in three fewer attack attempts (99-102); however, SJSU committed two more errors (11-9). UNLV hit .293 or better in all three sets, with a team-high .321 (11-2-28) in the third. SJSU hit .321 and .429 in the first and third with only two errors in each set, respectively, but was limited to a .121 effort with seven errors in the second.
Rolda used team highs in assists (16) and digs (12) to notch her third double-double of the year and fifth of her Rebel career. Additionally, she aced a pair of serves.
Hayden was the only Rebel to register double digits in kills with her 15 to go along with six aces and one assist on the offensive side of the net, while adding seven digs and one assisted block on the defensive end.
The foursome of
Kate Brennan (six kills/.556),
Shelby Capllonch (5/.400),
Macy Smith (5/.400) and
Thea Sweder combined to hit .474 with 22 kills and only four errors in 38 swings.
REBEL NOTES:
- UNLV has now won four straight matches in the series and 11 of the last 12 to push its lead in the head-to-head series with San Jose State to five at 12-7.
- UNLV is now 3-1 in three-set matches this season.
- Hayden had six aces in the match to bump her season total to 60 and her career tally to 217; thus, increasing her UNLV and Mountain West record with each subsequent ace.
- With help from her 42 attack attempts, Hayden moved into fourth place in the program's career record book with 3,282, surpassing Daryn Glenn's 3,260 amassed from 2011-14.
- Hayden's seven digs give her 969 for her career and moved her within seven of tying former Rebel and current assistant coach
Melody Nua's 918 notched from 2005-08.

Lauryn Burt moved solely into 10th place in UNLV's single-season record book with help from one ace vs. SJSU, giving her 38 on the year and snapping a tie with Sheila Nick's 37 aces from the 1984 campaign.
