LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Â Seniors LaTecia Smith and Rodjanae Wade combined for 35 points and UNLV jumped out to a 16-2 lead and never looked back as the Lady Rebels claimed a 66-57 victory over South Carolina State Saturday night in the Cox Pavilion. UNLV had lost to the Bulldogs a year ago in Orangeburg, South Carolina after scoring just 23 first half points, but it was a different story this time around as UNLV had 25 points by the end of the first quarter on the way to its first win of the season (1-3).
THE TURNING POINT: The Lady Rebels were on fire to start the game, both offensively as they made six of their first nine shots, and defensively, holding the Bulldogs to just one field goal in their first 12 attempts. SCSU did not score its third and fourth points until the three-minute mark, to close within 16-4. UNLV led by double-digits almost the entire game expect for 55 seconds in the fourth quarter.
LADY REBEL OF THE GAME: Wade now has three double-doubles in the first four games of the season after posting 15 points and 10 rebounds against the Bulldogs.
STAT OF THE GAME:Â The Lady Rebels dominated the boards, with a 48-29 advantage.
LADY REBEL NOTES
* - Smith tied her career-high of 20 points, set in the last game, on 9-of-14 shooting along with six rebounds.
* - UNLV's biggest lead of the night was 18 in the third quarter (43-25).
* - 10 different players recorded a rebound for UNLV Saturday.
NEXT UP: UNLV will host Elon in the first game of the Lady Rebel Round-Up Saturday, Nov. 30 at 11 am in the Cox Pavilion. IUPUI and St. John's will then play in the next game at 1:30 pm, with the consolation and championship games set for Sunday, Dec. 1. All tournament games will be held in the Cox Pavilion.
