Rebels Sweep Saturday's Doubleheader To Improve To 8-1

UNLV beats Georgetown 9-2 and dismisses Weber State 10-4 on day two of the Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball is back in the winning column after blowing out its competition Saturday on day two of the Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic at Eller Media Stadium. After being shutout in their first loss of the season Friday afternoon, the Rebel offense found its footing again Saturday with a 9-2 win over Georgetown and a 10-4 victory over Weber State.

UNLV is now 8-1 on the year, marking just the second time in program history the team has started with just one loss through the first nine games. The other was in 1995, which was the last time the Rebels advanced to the Women's College World Series.

The Rebels came into the weekend averaging just over eight runs per game after scoring six or more in five games on opening weekend, but they were limited to just two runs in two games Friday. That changed Saturday as UNLV scored 19 runs on 22 hits in the wins, while it is now outscoring its opponents 63-22 on the year.

The pitching staff wasn't as stingy on Saturday, but the trio of Charlie Masterson, Jenny Bressler and Breana Burke did its job to hold off the Hoyas and Wildcats when it needed to and let the offense go to work.

The star of the day on the defensive side was freshman third baseman Lauryn Barker, who made several stellar grabs on the hot corner to lead a defense that didn't commit an error in the two victories.

GAME 1: UNLV 9 Georgetown 2

THE TURNING POINT: The Hoyas struck first in the top of the first with one run on three hits, but the Rebels responded quickly, scoring two in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good. Junior Lauren Tycksen started the rally with a single and stolen base and Mia Trejo brought her home with a double to left center. Federe then brought Trejo home with a two-out single down the right field line to make it 2-1. The Rebels added three runs in the second to take control and pulled away with four in the fourth.

STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV scored it most first-inning runs this season with four against the Hoyas.

REBEL OF THE GAME: After giving up one run in the opening frame, junior Charlie Masterson settled down and went to work against Georgetown, giving up just one other run and six more hits with five total strikeouts in a complete-game performance. She is now 2-0 this year.

GAME 2: UNLV 10 Weber State 4

THE TURNING POINT:
For a second straight game, UNLV's opponent took a first-inning lead only to see UNLV respond immediately, this time with four runs. The Wildcats fought back, however, scoring two runs in the second on starter Jenny Bressler, then tying it at four with a run off reliever Breana Burke in the top of the fourth. Again, the response was quick in the bottom half of the inning as Bondi singled to center, then stole second and scored the game-winner run on a Tycksen double to left center. UNLV added four more runs in the inning to deflate any Weber State comeback attempt.

STAT OF THE GAME: The Rebels drew a season-high seven walks in the game.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Tycksen continues to impress with her prowess at the plate and speed on the bases. The junior transfer went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI, including what proved to be the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the fourth.

UP NEXT: UNLV will finish out the weekend Sunday against UTEP at 10:30 a.m. at Eller Media Stadium before heading out on the road for the next two weekends for tournaments in Riverside, California and Conway, South Carolina.

REBEL NOTES:
* This is the first annual Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic
* The Rebels are now 25 for 26 on stolen bases this year, just six shy of their season total all of last season
* Juniors Reina Bondi and Lauren Tycksen lead the way as they are a combined 17-for-17, with Reina's 10-for-10 mark matching her career high as a freshman in 2017
* Fox switched up the top of the lineup a bit, with Trejo taking the three spot over Justine Federe. The group was still extremely productive, combining to go 7-for-11 (.636) with six runs scored, two walks and two RBI
* Junior Justine Federe was a RBI machine Saturday as she went 3-for-6 from the plate with 5 RBI on the day
* Freshman Statia Cermak had a pinch-hit inside the park home run that scored three runs against the Hoyas as part of a four-run fourth to put the game away for good
