Rebels' Winning Streak Halted With Pair Of Losses Saturday

UNLV loses 5-0 to Maryland and 5-3 to Portland State on day two of the Amy S. Harrison Classic in Riverside, California

RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Saturday as the Rebels dropped both their Saturday contests at the Amy S. Harrison Classic in Riverside, California. UNLV was shut out for just the second time this season in a 5-0 loss to Maryland to open the day, then dropped game two 5-3 to Portland State.

UNLV is now 10-3 through the first 13 games for the second straight year under head coach Fox, marking just the seventh time in the program's 35-year history the team has started at 10-3 or better.

Coming into today's games, UNLV had only trailed in three innings through the first 11 games - all three were first-inning deficits - and had yet to face a deficit of more than one run until finding itself in the situation twice on Saturday. The Rebels trailed for six innings against the Terrapins and faced a five-run deficit, then trailed Portland State by four runs through three and half innings in game two before losing 5-3.

The Rebels' explosive offense was limited to three runs on 14 hits in the two contests and scored fewer than five runs in a single game for just the third and fourth times this year. UNLV had its opportunities, but couldn't take advantage as it left 12 players on base and went 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

GAME 1: Maryland 5 UNLV 0

THE TURNING POINT:
In the bottom of the first, the Rebels loaded the bases with three hits, but a groundout ended the opportunity without any runs on the board. In the top half of the very next frame, Maryland put two runs up on a walk and a pair of singles to take the lead and the Rebels couldn't get anything going after that, scattering just three more hits over the final five innings.

STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV was held to six hits or fewer for just the third time this season.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Despite allowing two runs in the seventh, Charlie Masterson was solid in her relief appearance, giving up just the two runs on five hits in 4.0 inning pitched with five strikeouts.

GAME 2: Portland State 5 UNLV 3

THE TURNING POINT:
With the score 0-0 in the top of the second, PSU's leadoff batter reached base on a catcher's interference call. Three straight singles, a walk and a groundout led to three runs in the inning for the Vikings. PSU added another in the top of the fourth to make it 4-0 and UNLV tried to scrape back with runs in the fourth and fifth, but a sixth-inning PSU solo shot in the sixth all but sealed the game.

STAT OF THE GAME: PSU's sixth-inning home run off Jenny Bressler was just the third the Rebels have given up all year.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Freshman Statia Cermak, who has been money in pinch-hit situations with a 5-for-5 line, started both games at DH on Saturday. She was the only player to collect multiple hits in either game with a 2-for-3 day against PSU.

QUOTABLES:
"Today was difficult day. We didn't play our game and take advantage of our opportunities. There's always going to be bumps throughout a season and we'd rather them be now. I'm excited to see how the team responds."
- Head coach Kristie Fox
